Lead the design and development of next-generation food recycling hardware, focusing on energy efficiency and user experience, while mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
The summary above was generated by AI

Mill is a waste prevention technology company reimagining what it means to eliminate waste, starting with food. We build smart systems and infrastructure for homes, businesses, and municipalities that transform food scraps from landfill-bound waste into valuable resources, including chicken feed. Tens of thousands of Mil’s residential food recyclers are already helping households divert millions of pounds of food scraps every year, paving the way for our upcoming launch of Mill Commercial—the industry’s first end-to-end solution for managing, understanding, and preventing food waste in commercial environments (e.g. grocery, restaurants, food services). At Mill, we are passionate about building easy-to-use, beautifully designed technologies that keep food in the food system and out of landfills.

About this Role:

As a member of Mill’s Product Design Engineering team, you will be part of a cross functional team to design, validate and ship Mill’s next generation hardware products. You will work closely with other members of the PD team as well as cross functional groups including Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, Reliability, Product Management and Operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the mechanical design of a next generation Mill Food Recycler with a focus on energy efficiency, reliability, size optimization and UX. Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical engineering, systems engineering, firmware, industrial design, product management, and business development teams to incorporate key constraints and requirements into the final product.
  • Develop novel approaches for grinding, heating, condensing, and emptying mechanisms via proof of concept prototypes, thermal and structural simulations, and physical mock ups.
  • Engineer parts and systems for scale with careful consideration of cost, part consolidation, ease of assembly, and repairability.
  • Work with Mill operations team, suppliers, and CM partners to source customs and OTS components, validate manufacturing processes, and troubleshoot both factory and field issues.
  • Drive testing and validation across thermal, mechanical, durability, and safety dimensions—ensuring the product meets certification standards and product lifetime requirements.
  • Mentor and support engineers earlier in their career as we work through multiple phases of product development.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 7+ years experience working in mechanical product design designing multiple parts in complex systems. Has a track record of taking multiple products from concept phase to mass production. Home and industrial appliance industries are preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanisms, thermals, and fluid dynamics
  • Expertise in CAD modeling, experience with NX is preferred
  • Detailed knowledge plastics and metal part manufacturing processes (die casting, sheet metal, investment casting, CNC machining, plating/finishing) along with other fabrication methods for high volume production
  • Mastery of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Tolerance Analysis, GD&T
  • Experience performing simulations (FEA, Thermal, CFD) and rapid prototyping to validate designs
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering fundamentals to find simple solutions to complex problems
  • Self driven with strong organization and communication skills
  • Ability to travel up to 10%

The estimated base salary range for this position is $190k to $235k, which does not include the any benefits or equity. Various factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs.
