ABOUT THE ROLE
We are currently seeking a contract Writer to work on an original Tragedy Mystery Drama webcomic within the BL genre. Using provided materials as the foundations of the story, you will be partnering with our team to bring our developed story primer to life!
For this project, we are creating a contemporary drama series set in a University, where the core story centers on the aftermath of a friendship, years after the death of a childhood friend. The themes within this series will be very dark, with moments of comfort between two male college students who have reconnected after many years apart. We will need a writer who is able to talk about the sensitive topic of suicide and the journey of healing for the people left behind.
As a platform, Storygrounds is exploring new ways for creators and their fan communities to connect in more collaborative and impactful ways. You will be a pioneer in helping to make the webcomic space more connected.

WHAT YOU WOULD DO
- Partner with Storygrounds, as well as the Original IP Creator, on story development.
- Partnered with an artist, you will work alongside the Storygrounds team to help develop an original webcomic IP.
- Using provided materials as a foundation, you will lead the development of the project’s plot, characters, lore, and setting and construct a well-organized story bible.
- Compose high-quality scripts for each episode (50-65 panels per episode), delivered on a weekly basis.
- Work closely with Storygrounds internal editorial to best adhere to house style, receive, discuss, and implement feedback.
- Provide support and input on the artistic direction of the project to ensure that the story is best interpreted through the artwork.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Comfort and ability in writing a fictional drama story that revolves around death and suicide.
- Portfolio or writing samples that demonstrate the ability to write within the Tragedy, Mystery, and Drama genres.
- Ability to write within the BL (boy love) genre.
- Ability to craft a story where pieces of the story are told through memories and moments, culminating in a shocking finale of a revelation.
- A deep passion for anime or comics —and ideally webcomics—especially those in the mystery, drama, heartwarming/comfort genres.
- Have worked on at least 1+ professionally produced projects and are able to share ample script samples.
- Must be available to commit to a given project for at least 8 months with potential for extension.
- Embodies a collaborative mindset, able to accept feedback, implement feedback, and permit flexibility on how a story is told.
- Must be able to provide clean, organized scripts punctually. Team player who can communicate punctually and professionally.
- Contribute to a positive work and team environment.
- Able to attend occasional kick-off and sync-up meetings during Pacific time-zone work hours (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM).
NICE TO HAVE
- Have worked on Webcomic productions OR have a demonstrable portfolio of comic samples.
- Have experience working across various webcomic genres, including slice-of-life, romance, drama, and comedy.
