Company Overview

Promise modernizes how government agencies and utilities support people in financial difficulty. We build technology that makes it simple for residents to receive benefits, engage with assistance programs, set up flexible payment plans, and stay on track—while helping agencies increase efficiency, recover revenue, and deliver services with dignity. Our mission is to transform public systems so they work better for everyone, especially the most vulnerable.

Our team includes experts from companies like Palantir, Google, Stripe , and esteemed government leaders. We work hard and believe deeply in what we do. We're looking for excellent people to build innovative, resilient technology.

Backed by over $50 million in funding from top investors – such as Reid Hoffman, Howard Schultz, Michael Seibel, Y Combinator, 8VC, The General Partnership, First Round Capital, Kapor Capital, XYZ Ventures, and Bronze Investments – Promise has been recognized as one of Fast Company's "World's Most Innovative Companies of 2022,” “Forbes Next Billion-Dollar Startups 2024,” and Y Combinator’s #1 GovTech startup.

Role Overview

The Operations Engineer will join Promise’s Operations team to own, improve, and automate end-to-end processes that power how we serve customers and government partners. This is a hands-on role for someone who thrives on solving operational bottlenecks and then building themselves out of the work through better systems, tools, and automation.

You will work closely with cross-functional partners in Delivery, Product, and Engineering. The ideal candidate is an early-career, operationally excellent generalist who is technical, communicative, and pragmatic.

What You’ll Do
  • Own and improve operational systems across key areas, examples are: support operations of third-party tooling, utility operations, and user support.

  • Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to identify and eliminate process inefficiencies.

  • Build systems and tools that reduce manual work and improve efficiency.

  • Track and report operational metrics to drive accountability and continuous improvement.

  • Automate repetitive work through better systems and processes, continually building yourself out of manual tasks.

What Will Enable You
  • 2-4 years of experience in operations, business systems, or a related technical or analytical role.

  • Strong operational instincts with the ability to diagnose and streamline workflows.

  • Technical fluency and comfort using APIs, dashboards, or lightweight scripting to solve problems.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to translate between business and technical teams.

  • High attention to detail and a bias toward execution.

  • Bonus: Experience in government, utilities, or high-volume customer operations.

Benefits and Work Environment

At Promise, we invest in our team’s well-being, growth, and sense of ownership.

  • Equity for All: All full-time employees receive stock options to share in our company’s success.

  • 100% Paid Health Coverage: We cover 100% of base medical, dental, and vision insurance plans for employees and their dependents.

  • Hybrid Work: We deeply value in-person collaboration and are in-office or on-site at least four days a week.
