Position overview
Avaaz is searching for a mission-driven Operations Officer (Finance) to join its multicultural and international team in a full-time role. The Finance team supports Avaaz’s campaigns and global operations through accurate financial records, reliable payments and timely financial information.
The role will support day-to-day finance operations across Avaaz’s US and UK entities, including accounts payable, expense reporting, reconciliations and support for financial reporting and audits. You will take responsibility for assigned processes, provide cover across the team and help improve how we work as our systems and operations develop.
The position calls for strong attention to detail, dependable follow-through and clear communication with colleagues and vendors. The Operations Officer (Finance) will report to a member of the Finance team.
Responsibilities
- Manage assigned payment and accounts payable workflows, including reviewing invoices, coding transactions and preparing payments across multiple platforms and currencies.
- Check that payments and expenses have the required approvals and supporting documentation, and follow up on missing information or discrepancies.
- Review credit card and expense reports and arrange or provide approvals within delegated authority.
- Apply the correct entity, currency, account and project coding, seeking guidance where the treatment is unclear.
- Maintain accurate accounting records and support bank, payment-platform and other account reconciliations, investigating and resolving differences.
- Support monthly and quarterly close, financial reporting and audits by preparing schedules, checking data and responding to information requests.
- Help maintain assigned financial trackers, such as revenue, grants, advances or budget expenditure, and flag discrepancies or outstanding items.
- Communicate clearly with vendors, colleagues and budget holders to resolve queries and obtain timely information, escalating delays or competing priorities early.
- Keep financial records and process documentation organized and accessible, and provide clear handovers and backup cover for colleagues, including payments.
- Apply and explain Finance policies, protect confidential information and follow agreed financial controls and compliance procedures.
- Contribute to process and system improvements through documentation, testing, data checks and adoption of approved tools and automation.
- Work with colleagues across Operations and campaigns on financial processes and undertake other appropriate Finance responsibilities as agreed.

- Experience with QuickBooks or another accounting package is preferred. Experience with international payments, multiple currencies or multiple entities is an asset.
- High proficiency in English is required. Additional languages are an asset.

Avaaz is a global organization, with most of our work done remotely. Our staff are based all over the world. For this position, the candidate would ideally be based in the Americas (Eastern Time) time zones.

The salary for this role is based on location and experience. Candidates will be provided with an accurate range in local currency.
- US/Canada (Eastern Time Zone): $71,000 - 78,000 USD
- Central and South America: $63,000 - 69,000 USD
