About the Role
We are hiring an Operations Safety Engineer to support the development and expansion of our Nuro Driver technology. This individual will support the development and integration of the Operations Safety program and Safety Management System (SMS) components into our Autonomous Operations programs. In this role, you will be a member of our Operations Safety Team under the direction of the Operations Safety Manager. This individual will work cross-functionally within Nuro to enable the operational scaling of our technology in a safe and resource-efficient manner.

About the Work

  • Support the implementation and continuous improvement of core Safety Management System (SMS) programs, including Safety Risk Management, Safety Assurance, and Safety Promotion.
  • Support the company-wide Emergency Response Plan (ERP), coordinating cross-functional response and ensuring timely resolution.
  • Support the safe deployment of new Operational Design Domains (ODD) for vehicle platforms by applying SMS activities and engaging with key stakeholders.
  • Proactively identify and assess potential safety hazards for operations, utilizing structured methodologies to inform product requirements and operational decisions.
  • Develop and deliver training on safety programs across the Operations organization to cultivate a strong knowledge base and safety culture.
  • Design and implement safety tools to automate and streamline SMS workflows, ensuring seamless and efficient operations.
  • Collaborate with Data Science to develop and analyze safety metrics to monitor fleet-wide performance.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of implemented safety controls and provide actionable recommendations to promote ongoing operational excellence.
  • Serve as a member of the on-call emergency response team, supporting rapid response and effective incident management for all of Nuro’s operational locations.

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Safety, or a related technical field
  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience in transportation safety, safety engineering, autonomous safety, or related domains 
  • Experience in conducting safety risk assessment for operational or technical systems
  • Experience leading cross-functional programs involving multiple disciplines
  • Strong technical writing skills within safety or operational environments 
  • Willingness to support in an on-call emergency response rotation, including support outside of standard business hours

Bonus Points

  • Direct experience in the autonomous vehicle (AV) or transportation industry 
  • Demonstrated ability to support new or maturing SMS programs across complex, cross-functional environments
  • Hands-on experience supporting incident investigations and root cause analysis with measurable closure of corrective and preventive actions
  • Certifications or other relevant training in incident management

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $120,270 and $180,410 in the Bay Area, CA, or between $102,230 and $153,350 in Houston, TX, for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
