What's the role?About the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher or recent PhD graduate or Research Assistant to join our multidisciplinary team focused on innovation in autonomous driving and high-definition (HD) mapping. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and applied development at the intersection of AI/ML, HD maps, and sensor fusion.

In this role, you will be empowered to explore technical domains critical to the project’s success. You’ll work in a collaborative environment with teams across research, engineering, and architecture to push the boundaries of perception systems using HD map data.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Develop a prototype perception stack using an existing development environment as a baseline.

  • Create applications of HD map attributes that enhance perception stack functions.

  • Analyze HD map specifications (HD specs) and relate them to L2/L2+ and L3 functionalities.

  • Collaborate with internal and external research teams to build innovative solutions fusing map and sensor data.

  • Test prototypes in simulated environments and deliver performance metrics.

  • Contribute to development of components for deployment in test fleets.

  • Automate collection and analysis of field test data, and use insights to refine the function stack.

Who are you?
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a related field. (Masters Degree with intensive research experience in related field is also acceptable)

  • Demonstrated interest or research experience in autonomous driving, intelligent systems, or similar.

  • Solid foundation in AI/ML, particularly as applied to perception or control systems.

  • Proficiency in C/C++ or Rust for systems-level programming.

  • Strong skills in Python and its data analysis ecosystem (e.g., pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn); experience with visualization tools like Tableau or Excel is a plus.

  • Self-driven, curious, and passionate about working in a fast-evolving technological domain.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across disciplines.

What do we offer:

  • A chance to work on real, production-grade challenges in autonomous driving

  • Work on high-impact problems in next-generation mobility and intelligent systems.

  • Collaborate with experts across disciplines in a supportive and innovative environment.

  • Mentorship from experienced engineers and architects at HERE

  • Access to HERE’s simulation platforms, HD map data, and test vehicle data

  • A collaborative, open, and learning-friendly environment

Please note:
  • This is a 1-year fixed-term full-time (or 80% FTE) contract.
  • The role is based in Berlin - hybrid work policy benefit
  • We provide a relocation allowance for domestic (Germany) relocation to support your move to Berlin.
