Company Overview

Amperesand is reinventing how the world powers its most critical systems.

We are facing a once-in-a-generation opportunity for infrastructure disruption. Electricity demand is skyrocketing, driven by AI factories, electric vehicles, and modern industrial growth. Energy supply is shifting to incorporate a more diverse mix of resources – including solar, gas, and batteries – at a massive scale.

And yet the power infrastructure behind our latest mega-projects hasn’t meaningfully changed in nearly 100 years. Supply chains for today’s infrastructure equipment can’t match the pace and sophistication of critical energy projects. Amperesand is building hardware and software that rewrites this broken power infrastructure playbook to support a new era of energy abundance.

We’ve built a new class of intelligent, software-defined power infrastructure products leveraging a decade of advanced medium voltage Solid State Transformer research that’s now ready for commercial deployment.

Our products and solutions go far beyond the capabilities of traditional electrical equipment. We make power systems that are faster to deploy, dramatically smaller and more efficient, and capable of supporting modern, dynamic energy needs for tomorrow’s most demanding energy consumers.

Scalable in-house advanced manufacturing capability is our foundation for meeting timeline and quality expectation to serve infrastructure customers around the world.

Amperesand is led by breakthrough energy hardware development veterans and funded by top tier investors who share our vision of building a category-defining energy technology company.

With hubs in San Francisco, Reno, and Singapore, our global team is laser focused on building foundational technology to solve the most pressing problems in power infrastructure at scale.

Join us in building the power foundation of the future!

Role Summary
As a Power Electronics Control Intern, you will contribute to the design, modeling, analysis, and validation of advanced power conversion systems, including AC-DC and DC-DC converters used in low-voltage and medium-voltage applications. This internship provides hands-on exposure to real-world power electronics development, with an emphasis on control systems, system-level behavior, and laboratory validation. You will work closely with experienced power electronics, firmware, and system engineers, contributing through analysis, simulation, implementation support, and experimental evaluation of advanced power converters under technical guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in modeling and analysis of power converters and control loops using control-oriented
    techniques.
  • Support development and evaluation of control strategies for AC-DC and DC-DC power converters.
  • Help characterize system behavior, including stability, transient response, and operating limits.
  • Participate in laboratory testing, debugging, and validation of power electronics hardware.
  • Support data collection, analysis, and documentation of experimental results.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and system engineers on power electronics
    development tasks.
  • Contribute to simulation and modeling activities using industry-standard tools.
  • Follow safe laboratory practices when working with high-voltage and high-power systems.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Academic coursework or project experience in power electronics, control systems, or related areas.
  • Basic understanding of power converter operation and control concepts.
  • Familiarity with control fundamentals such as feedback, stability, and transient response.
  • Ability to analyze technical problems and learn new concepts quickly.
  • Willingness to work hands-on in a laboratory environment under supervision.

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Coursework or project experience involving power electronics converters or control systems.
  • Exposure to modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or PSIM.
  • Basic programming experience in C/C++, Python, or MATLAB.
  • Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation such as oscilloscopes and power supplies.
  • Interest in advanced power conversion systems (e.g., medium-voltage, multilevel, or SST architectures).

What You Will Learn:

  • Practical control-oriented modeling and analysis of power converters
  • Hands-on experience validating control concepts on real hardware.
  • Exposure to AC-DC and DC-DC converter architectures across LV and MV systems.
  • How control, hardware, and firmware interact in real-world power electronics systems.
  • Industry best practices for testing, debugging, and documentation

Please note: This role requires working on-site 5 days a week. We do not offer hybrid or remote options.
