We’re seeking a seasoned Principal Data Platform Architect to design, evolve, and govern our enterprise data platform on AWS. This role will lead architecture across ingestion, storage, governance, transformation, semantics, and consumption layers—enabling analytics, AI/ML, and operational use cases. You’ll work closely with engineering, data science, analytics, security, and business stakeholders to deliver a resilient, secure, and cost-effective platform that accelerates data value across the company.

Role qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 10+ years in data engineering/architecture, with 5+ years architecting on AWS.
  • Proven track record delivering secure, governed, and highly available data platforms.
  • Experience leading platform migrations or net-new builds using lakehouse approaches.
  • Hands-on involvement with EMR Serverless, Redshift, Lake Formation, DataZone, MWAA orchestration.
  • AWS Expertise (S3, IAM, KMS, Glue, Lake Formation, DataZone, EMR, Redshift, Athena, Lambda, Step Functions, MWAA, CloudWatch, EventBridge, CloudTrail, VPC, PrivateLink, Gateway/Interface endpoints).
  • Data Architecture: Lakehouse patterns, medallion architecture, Parquet/Iceberg, distributed processing (Spark).
  • Security & Compliance: Row/column-level security, encryption, HIPAA handling.
  • Data Modeling & Performance: Dimensional modeling, semantic modeling, SQL tuning, partitioning.
  • Orchestration & CI/CD: Airflow DAG design, Step Functions, Terraform/CDK, GitOps.
  • Observability & Data Quality: Metrics, lineage, validation frameworks.
  • Communication & Leadership: Clear technical writing and stakeholder engagement.
  • Architectural Thinking: Systems design and trade-off analysis with pragmatic standards.
  • Stakeholder Leadership: Influences cross-functional teams, and translates business needs into platform capabilities.
  • Execution Excellence: Drives from blueprint to production; de-risks complexity with automation and guardrails.
  • Security-First Mindset: Embeds controls in design.
  • Operational Discipline: Emphasizes reliability and cost efficiency.
  • Continuous Improvement: Measures outcomes and iterates, fostering a learning culture.

To differentiate yourself, you:

  • AWS certifications a plus (e.g., AWS Certified Data & Analytics – Specialty, AWS Solutions Architect – Professional)
  • Streaming & Event-Driven: MSK/Kafka, Kinesis, CDC with DMS.
  • ML/MLOps: SageMaker Pipelines, Feature Store, model registry.
  • BI/Visualization: QuickSight administration and optimization.
  • Governance Tools: Collibra/Alation experience.
  • Data Contracts & Mesh: Domain-aligned data products, consumer-producer SLAs.
  • Healthcare/Insurance Domain: Familiarity with X12 data.

What you will be doing:

  • Platform Architecture & Roadmap: Define end-to-end reference architectures leveraging AWS services (S3, Glue, Lake Formation, DataZone, EMR/EMR Serverless, Redshift, Athena, MWAA/Airflow, Step Functions, Lambda, KMS, IAM, CloudWatch, EventBridge).
  • Data Governance & Security: Implement fine-grained data access controls with AWS Lake Formation; standardize data cataloging and metadata via Glue and DataZone; ensure compliance (HIPAA, SOC 2).
  • Ingestion & Transformation: Define scalable ingestion frameworks for batch and streaming; orchestrate ETL/ELT with Glue, EMR Serverless, MWAA, and Step Functions.
  • Analytics & Semantic Layer: Architect curated layers for BI/ML using Redshift, Athena, QuickSight; optimize performance and cost.
  • ML Enablement: Operationalize ML on SageMaker; ensure reproducibility and secure access to datasets.
  • Reliability, Observability & FinOps: Define SLAs/SLOs; implement monitoring via CloudWatch; drive cost governance.
  • Collaboration & Leadership: Provide architectural guidance; document standards and mentor engineers.
