As a Principal Infrastructure Engineer on the Corporate Infrastructure Platforms team, you will serve as a senior technical leader for Mainframe (IBM Z), Midrange (IBM Power), enterprise storage, and SAN/FICON infrastructure. This role blends hands-on engineering with end-to-end architecture ownership across IBM DS8000, IBM FlashSystem, Dell Data Domain, and Brocade/Cisco environments. You will lead major upgrades, technology refreshes, migrations, and capacity planning initiatives, while driving technical troubleshooting, engineering standards, automation, operational controls, and AI-assisted engineering to enhance platform reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the principal technical lead for IBM Z, IBM Power, enterprise storage, and SAN architecture, establishing technical direction, engineering standards, and best practices.
- Lead critical infrastructure initiatives, including platform upgrades, technology refreshes, capacity expansions, migrations, lifecycle planning, and major configuration changes.
- Engineer and support IBM Z and IBM Power environments, including HMC/SE management, LPAR configuration, processor and memory planning, and capacity management.
- Design and operate enterprise storage platforms, including IBM DS8000, IBM FlashSystem, Dell Data Domain, and IBM TS7700, with a focus on performance, availability, replication, and optimization.
- Own SAN, FICON, and mainframe I/O engineering, including Brocade/Cisco directors, fabric design, zoning, pathing, redundancy, IOGEN/I/O configuration, and complex troubleshooting.
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, runbooks, controls, and configuration baselines, ensuring infrastructure changes and documentation are accurate, controlled, and audit-ready.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship while leveraging automation and AI-assisted engineering to improve incident triage, analysis, change-risk management, documentation, and operational efficiency.
Required Skills and Experience
- 10+ years of hands-on enterprise infrastructure engineering experience, with significant depth in IBM Z / System z, enterprise storage, and SAN environments.
- Deep expertise with IBM Z hardware and IBM DS8000, including configuration, capacity, performance, availability, and platform operations.
- Strong experience with SAN technologies, including Brocade and Cisco directors, fabric architecture, zoning, FICON connectivity, redundancy, and multi-fabric troubleshooting.
- Hands-on experience with IOGEN / mainframe I/O configuration, disciplined change execution, and complex infrastructure dependency management.
- Experience with IBM FlashSystem, IBM Power Systems, and Dell Data Domain, including platform engineering, storage configuration, and operations.
- Strong knowledge of storage replication, networking, capacity management, data segmentation, and infrastructure resiliency, including their impact on performance and operational controls.
- Proven principal-level technical leadership, with strong troubleshooting, communication, documentation, automation, and AI-assisted engineering skills and the ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with large-scale multi-site IBM Z / storage environments and complex SAN topologies.
- Vendor certifications or equivalent depth in IBM Z, IBM storage, SAN (Brocade/Cisco), or IBM Power.
- Experience integrating infrastructure telemetry into monitoring/alerting platforms and building actionable operational dashboards.
- Experience modernizing operational practices (standardized change patterns, configuration baselines, automated validation, post-change monitoring).
