Yahoo serves as a trusted guide for hundreds of millions of people globally, helping them achieve their goals online through our portfolio of iconic products. For advertisers, Yahoo Advertising offers omnichannel solutions and powerful data to engage with our brands and deliver results.

A Little About Us

Yahoo reaches hundreds of millions of people globally through iconic products like Yahoo.com and Yahoo News. We are at the forefront of a generational shift in how information is consumed. By blending our world-class editorial expertise with cutting-edge AI, we are redefining digital habits. Our team is a high-velocity lab where designers, engineers, and product leaders build the next generation of agentic and generative consumer experiences.

About the Role

As a Principal Product Designer, you are the visionary architect of our AI-driven consumer interfaces. You will lead the design direction for Yahoo News and Yahoo.com, transforming complex, emerging technologies into intuitive, human-centric products. This is a "zero-to-one" role designed for a master of craft who sees AI not just as a tool, but as a medium to unlock new growth opportunities. You will operate with high autonomy, guiding multidisciplinary teams to build "human-in-the-loop" systems that prioritize user trust and editorial integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end architectural design of agentic companions and generative interfaces, moving from abstract AI concepts to polished, production-ready solutions.

  • Architect and oversee AI-augmented design workflows, implementing tools that increase the team's speed and quality of visual exploration.

  • Work upstream with executive leadership to shape the strategic design direction of AI initiatives across the Yahoo portfolio.

  • Utilize prompt engineering and structured interaction with LLMs to prototype, validate, and iterate on complex user flows and personalized content experiences.

  • Establish and enforce standards for validating AI-generated design outputs, ensuring consistency, brand alignment, and the absence of technical hallucinations.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Researchers, PMs, and Engineers to turn high-ambiguity concepts into user-centered solutions.

  • Foster a culture of AI-driven excellence by mentoring designers on how to replace repetitive design tasks with automated, AI-assisted workflows.

  • Partner with research teams to gather data-driven insights, ensuring our AI products solve real user pain points.

  • Present complex design rationales to senior stakeholders, defending the "why" behind AI-driven interactions with clarity and technical confidence.

Basic Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience designing high-scale digital products across web and mobile.

  • Experience directly leveraging AI (generative or agentic) within a professional design workflow.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in using AI tools (e.g., Gemini, Midjourney, Figma AI) for research synthesis, prototyping, and visual craft.

  • A proven ability to design "zero-to-one" products, thriving in highly ambiguous, evolving environments.

  • Master-level product design thinking, with deep expertise in typography, layout, and brand application for consumer surfaces.

  • A commitment to continuous learning and the proactive suggestion of new AI-driven design methodologies.

  • Exceptional communication skills, with experience influencing and presenting to executive-level stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing human-in-the-loop systems where AI enhances, rather than replaces, editorial curation.

  • Specialized knowledge in prompt engineering for design systems or structured data visualization.

  • Experience in the media, news, or finance industries, navigating the intersection of information integrity and technology.

  • A portfolio that showcases not just final designs, but the AI-augmented process used to arrive at them.
