About the Role
As a Principal Product Designer, you will lead visual craft and interaction excellence across Yahoo's most critical consumer surfaces. You will create high-fidelity prototypes at speed, translating concepts into polished, interaction-rich models that demonstrate usability, user flows, and visual delight. You will work across a broad and diverse set of surfaces: Y100/News on the web, Breaking News, Scout modules, Topic pages, Movies, Publisher profiles, onboarding and subscriptions.
This is a role for an expert systems-thinking practitioner who excels in an AI-augmented environment. Drive the evolution of design standards, visual patterns, and interaction principles across Yahoo News and associated surfaces.
Move with velocity across multiple workstreams simultaneously, prioritizing quickly and maintaining high-quality output across a significant body of surface area.
Use AI tools like Claude Code, Cursor, Codex in combination with our design system to accelerate prototyping, visual exploration, and workflow efficiency.
Work upstream with design and product leadership to shape interaction direction and raise the quality bar across the portfolio.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Researchers, Product Managers, and Engineers to translate high-ambiguity concepts into user-centered solutions.
Partner with research teams to gather data-driven insights and validate interaction and usability decisions.
Proactively stay current on emerging AI design tools and methodologies, running experimentation pilots to streamline team systems, and advocating for responsible, high-impact AI adoption.
Mentor and develop junior designers, actively multiplying the team's overall impact by raising the standard for visual quality, prototyping rigor, and interaction fidelity.
Present design rationale to senior stakeholders, communicating the “why” behind design decisions with clarity and confidence.
Basic Qualifications
8+ years of experience designing high-scale digital products across web and mobile platforms.

Exceptional product design thinking, with deep expertise in typography, layout, visual systems, and brand application for consumer surfaces.
Demonstrated ability to operate in an AI-augmented workflow, showcasing judgment on when to utilize AI generation versus applying manual design craft.
