This role provides end-to-end technical ownership of existing and next-generation mobile applications, including mobile-to-backend integration architecture, secure device connectivity, and cloud service interactions. The Principal Engineer will drive architectural decisions, engineering best practices, software quality, and technical execution while leading and mentoring mobile engineers and collaborating closely with backend, cloud, and cross-functional engineering teams.

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in at least one mobile platform (Android or iOS), strong architectural knowledge of both, proven technical leadership, and experience delivering secure, reliable, and compliant software in a regulated environment.

Work Model, Location, Sponsorship:

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows a hybrid work model requiring employees to be in our local office at least three days per week. Relocation assistance is not available for this position at this time. Boston Scientific will not offer sponsorship or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position at this time.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Mobile Architecture & Ownership: Lead the architecture, technical design, development, and evolution of Android and iOS applications, including native and Kotlin Multiplatform solutions, across existing products and new development initiatives.
  • Mobile-to-Backend Architecture & Integration: Drive the end-to-end design and architecture of mobile application integration with backend and cloud services, including API contracts, data models, authentication, authorization, secure data exchange, error handling, synchronization, and connectivity resilience. Partner with backend and cloud engineering teams to define scalable, reliable, and maintainable system interfaces.
  • Technical Leadership: Serve as the technical lead for mobile engineering teams, providing technical direction, mentoring engineers, driving architectural decisions, and resolving complex engineering challenges.
  • Engineering Excellence: Establish and enforce coding standards, design patterns, code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD practices, and software development best practices to ensure high-quality, maintainable applications.
  • Platform Standards: Ensure adherence to Apple Human Interface Guidelines, Android Material Design, accessibility, performance, security, and platform-specific user experience standards.
  • Regulated Software Delivery: Own the technical quality and completeness of mobile software deliverables, including architecture, design documentation, risk assessments, traceability, and verification evidence, in accordance with FDA design controls, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, and internal quality processes.
  • Device & Cloud Connectivity: Oversee secure communication between mobile applications, implantable medical devices, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), cloud infrastructure, and supporting software platforms, ensuring end-to-end system reliability, performance, and cybersecurity.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Backend/Cloud, Firmware, Systems Engineering, UX/UI, Quality, Regulatory, Product Management, and Program Management teams to align system architecture, resolve technical dependencies, and drive product delivery.
  • Execution & Accountability: Drive technical planning, engineering estimates, risk mitigation, design reviews, integration readiness, and software delivery milestones from concept through commercialization and post-market maintenance.
  • Hands-On Engineering: Remain actively involved in critical design decisions, code reviews, prototyping, troubleshooting, and resolution of complex technical and integration challenges.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 8+ years in Android and/or iOS mobile application development.
  • 3+ years of technical leadership experience as a Principal Engineer, Technical Lead, Software Architect, or equivalent, driving architecture, engineering standards, and software delivery.

  • Strong experience in mobile software architecture, design patterns (MVVM, Clean Architecture), modularization, SDK development, and application lifecycle management.
  • Demonstrated experience architecting mobile-to-backend integrations, including RESTful APIs, API contracts, authentication and authorization, secure data transmission, data synchronization, error handling, and cloud-connected application design.
  • Experience collaborating with backend and cloud engineering teams to define service interfaces, address system-level integration challenges, and ensure application performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Proven ability to lead code reviews, establish engineering best practices, mentor engineers, and drive technical quality across development teams.
  • Experience integrating mobile applications with BLE-enabled devices, cloud services, and secure communication protocols.
