The Principal Software Engineer, Payments, serves as a strategic technical leader driving the design, architecture, and scalability of Turo’s global payment systems. This role blends deep technical expertise with strong cross-functional influence, partnering closely with product, accounting, finance, and legal teams to ensure compliance, accuracy, and operational excellence across all payment flows. The ideal candidate is an expert in building resilient, secure, and high-volume payment platforms, capable of guiding architectural decisions and mentoring senior engineers to deliver long-term solutions. As a trusted advisor to leadership, this individual shapes the technical vision for Payments, fostering collaboration, innovation, and alignment with Turo’s business goals.

What you will do:
  • Breaks down complex projects and independently designs and implements successful long-term solutions.

  • Evaluates technical designs for high-impact projects and advises teams to improve execution. 

  • Collaborates across teams and disciplines to solve problems and resolve technical debates.

  • Stays aware of changes to the company to anticipate and prevent obstacles from hindering team performance. 

  • Mentors other senior and staff engineers and partners with managers on strategy, collaboration, influence, execution, and other aspects of leadership. 

  • Participates in hiring; partnering with recruiters to align on candidate profiles, guiding and filling open engineering positions to improve efficiency in hiring pipelines.

  • Expected to possess deep technical domain knowledge of Turo, including DevOps adoption, to understand Turo’s infrastructure, system architecture, and build and deployment environments such that they can address critical issues in a timely fashion.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Has a track record of influencing and delivering projects with organizational impact and priority.

  • Bachelor’s degree and a combination of 10 years of relevant industry or academic experience. 

The SF base salary target range for this full-time position is $238,000-$297,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position in San Francisco, CA. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Turo highly values having employees working in-office to foster a collaborative work environment and company culture. This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule — Turists will be expected to work in the office 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Turo considers working in the office at least 3 days per week to be an essential function of this hybrid role.
