Why Join AngelList

We’re solving some of the hardest problems in venture capital and private markets. You’ll work with a team that values precision, urgency, and long-term thinking. If you want to shape how startups are funded and built, this is the place.

About AngelList

We exist to accelerate innovation by increasing the number of successful startups in the world. We do this by building the financial infrastructure that makes it easier for more people to invest in world-changing companies.

AngelList is the nexus of venture capital and the startup community. We support $171B+ in assets and have powered investments into over 13,000 startups—over 300 of which are unicorns. Today, 57% of top-tier U.S. VC deals involve investors on AngelList. While our scale is large, our ambition is larger.

If you're excited to build the future of private markets, come build with us.

About the Role:

AngelList is hiring a Product Counsel to sit at the intersection of law, product, and private markets innovation. Legal architecture isn't a constraint here — it's a competitive advantage.

You'll be embedded across product, engineering, and business teams, working on tightly regulated, zero-margin-for-error infrastructure: fund formation, banking infrastructure, investor onboarding, capital calls, and data systems. You'll help shape the regulatory playbook for the next generation of private markets. This role reports directly to the General Counsel of Product.

Most legal teams at financial companies are built to say no. Ours is built to find the yes — and then build the structure that makes it safe, scalable, and replicable. If you're energized by complexity, frustrated by boilerplate, and want your legal work to directly shape products used by thousands of GPs, LPs, and founders, this is the role.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the legal function for product across the full lifecycle — development, launch, scale, and maintenance — embedded directly in product and engineering teams, not advising from a distance.
  • Hold end-to-end ownership of bank partnership agreements, including deposit account agreements, custodial arrangements, and BaaS frameworks; be the definitive legal voice on wire processing, account structures, and payment flows with banking partners and finance/ops.
  • Stay ahead of the regulatory curve and own the contractual and operational alignment across banking partner relationships — BSA/AML, OCC guidance, EFTA/Reg E, GLBA, and evolving BaaS scrutiny from federal and state regulators.
  • Build and own the foundational legal document library for banking, payments, and investor products; lead on privacy (GDPR, CCPA) and securities law as they intersect with product decisions.
  • Architect scalable legal processes that give product teams the velocity they need without creating compliance exposure; take personal ownership of keeping internal teams sharp on regulatory developments and legal risk.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment with compliance, BD, engineering, and marketing — not as a passenger, but as a peer with a seat at the table.

What We're Looking For:

  • JD from a top-tier law school, active bar membership in good standing, and 6–10 years of legal experience with meaningful exposure to bank partnership structures, BaaS agreements, or payment infrastructure; fintech, VC, or SaaS platform experience is a plus.
  • Deep fluency in the banking and payments regulatory landscape — BSA/AML, OCC guidance, money transmission, and partner-bank compliance obligations.
  • Expertise in product counseling including privacy and data; familiarity with securities law (33 Act, 34 Act, ICA, IAA) is a plus.
  • Proven ability to take full ownership of complex initiatives, make calls in ambiguous environments, and bring non-lawyers along with clear, direct communication.
  • High output. Clear thinker. Strong point of view. Values-aligned.

If you don’t meet every requirement above, we still encourage you to apply. We value complementary strengths and operators who learn by doing.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
