Product Design

Metriport is an open-source data intelligence platform that helps healthcare organizations access and exchange patient data in real-time. We integrate with all major US healthcare IT systems and tap into comprehensive medical data for 300+ million individuals.

We've found product-market fit with multi-million ARR, 100+ customers (including Amazon One Medical, Strive Health, Circle Medical, and Brightside Health), backing from top VCs, and years of runway. We're ready to scale. We're a tight-knit, high-performing team of mostly former founders (including two YC alumni). We're engineering-heavy, operate with minimal bureaucracy and high autonomy, and hire based on competence, not prestige. We push hard—founders work six days a week from our SF office—but give everyone freedom to craft their schedule. We measure output and we're committed to sustainable intensity.

The Role As a Founding Designer at Metriport, you'll spend your time understanding customer workflows, defining the right solution to those problems, and making sure everything we ship — product, marketing, brand — looks and feels right. The upside is real autonomy: you set the design standard, you own the output, and you're not waiting on anyone else's approval. The tradeoff is that the scope is wide and the bar is high. If that sounds like too much, it probably is. If it sounds like exactly enough, keep reading.

At Metriport we think of design like a rough-hewn yet elegant table: does its job, looks right in the room, built to last, and finished. You'll bring that sensibility to everything — knowing when a decision needs more thought and when it needs to ship.

We strongly believe in the 80/20 rule, and rely on everyone joining our team to use it so that we can ship fast and continue to delight our users.

What You'll Do

Build and maintain the design system Establish a coherent design language — components, spacing, typography, color — that is simple and that engineers can build to without hand-holding.

Design features end to end Take features from rough concept to detailed spec, working closely with founders, PM, and engineers to ship solutions that are functional and feel considered.

Talk to, and advocate for, users Understand their workflows, form an opinionated view on the right solution, and drive toward it.

Own brand and marketing design Design across all marketing surfaces — website, sales collateral, event materials. You're the person we turn to when anything needs to look good.

Requirements

  • Design instincts: You produce Figma work that is considered and defensible — with clear opinions on typography, hierarchy, and interaction patterns.

  • Pragmatism: You know what to polish and what to ship. You walk the tightrope between craft and speed without falling off either side.

  • Technical literacy: You know enough about how software gets built to write specs engineers can use and have real tradeoff conversations.

  • The "Metriport" Mindset: Low ego, high ownership. You ask "Why can't this be done in 3 days?" instead of 3 weeks.

Our tech

On the frontend, we use React - on the backend, we rely on Node.js and TypeScript for writing core business logic. We deploy a wide range of AWS cloud services (ie ECS, Fargate, Lambda, etc), and manage our infrastructure as code with AWS CDK. Data lives in PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, S3, Snowflake, HAPI FHIR servers, and more.

Metriport provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome people from all backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and abilities.

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.
