About the role

Hex is looking for a Senior Product Designer to influence our design, product, and culture as an early member of the team. You might be a good fit if you enjoy building thoughtful products, empowering users, and helping data teams do their best work. Though we're a small team, we value building a thoughtful and intentional company culture. We prioritize autonomy, quality, feedback, and bias toward action.

Learn more about Design at Hex.

What you will do
  • Ownership from pencil to release. You will flex across user research, strategy, prototyping, interaction design, visual design, and being hands-on with code. You'll be be involved in both Structure (user flows & wireframes) and Surface (layout, colors, typography, iconography), and be responsible for holding each release at a high bar. We aspire to make each feature as complete as possible, but always leave the door open to iteration and improvement.
  • Beyond the typical. You will have the space to flex in disciplines outside of the normal day of a product designer, notably: user research and frontend development. We love designers who can contribute code and dive into polish alongside engineers.
  • Blank canvas. You are an early member of the Design team. You will influence our culture, processes, and the product. You will help establish the design culture within the company. As we grow, this will include hiring and mentoring.
  • Cross-functional. You will advocate for design through your work, and present cross-functionally while articulating your rationale. You will partner with Engineering to ensure our implementation and user experience is high-quality, and partner with Product to make sure we're building the right thing.
What we're looking for
  • A high technical acumen and experience designing for intricate problems and tools (bonus for having designed data or developer-oriented products)
  • A thoughtful care and attention to detail for visual delight
  • Experience in owning projects from start-to-finish, shipping at a high quality
  • A love for shipping at a high velocity
  • A tendency to self-direct and lean on your own prioritization methods to get your work done
  • A desire to proactively seek out qualitative and quantitative insights to inform and improve your designs
  • An understanding that designs are always evolving and seek impact over perfection
  • A growth mindset and want to help our team and processes evolve
  • Familiarity with user research methodologies, have participated in user research and testing, and have experience building prototypes for testing purposes

This role will be hybrid (2 days per week in office) based out of our SF office or NYC office by Union Square.

In addition to our unique culture, Hex proudly offers a competitive total rewards package, including but not limited to, market-benched salary & equity, comprehensive health benefits, and flexible paid time off.

The salary range for this role is: $200,000 - $215,000

The salary range shown may be a reflection of additional factors such as geographical location and skill ranges/levels we’re open to. Placement in the salary range will be decided upon completion of the interview process, taking into account factors like leaving room for growth, internal fairness & parity, your demonstrated skills, and the depth of your experience. Our Recruiting team will be able to provide more details during the interview process.

By submitting an application the candidate consents to the use of their personal information in accordance with the Hex Privacy policy: https://learn.hex.tech/docs/trust/privacy-policy.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
