At Ando, we’re rebuilding messaging software for a human-agent collaborative era. It’s not enough for it to just “work” or be at parity with Slack. Ando needs to “feel” like it’s working alongside you - it needs to be fast, beautiful, helpful, and predictive. Ando needs to be good enough for our users to want to spend hours of their days in for their working lives, and convince their friends to do the same.

We’re looking for a founding product designer who has strong UX instincts & a very very good eye for details.

What we're doing at Ando

  • Teams are already building agents and using them across Slack, email, and other tools. But these platforms weren't designed for human-AI collaboration. The answer isn't a better Slack though; we're rethinking communications from the ground up to support better collaboration between humans and agents.

About our brand & visual identity

  • Architecture is a form of art people are compelled to experience simply by living in a city. Slack and team messaging are similarly inevitable surfaces in our daily digital lives. Our goal is to build a digital platform where people feel at ease spending much of their day.

  • This company is named after Tadao Ando, a Japanese architect known for blending brutalism with light and glass. His work also captures a sense of peaceful silence (something we hope to achieve and use to differentiate from Slack), and his buildings often house Turrells, Kusamas, and more. All of this inspires the visual elements of our platform: minimal, unobtrusive product design that lets us focus on the layers on top, such as the rhythm of messaging, sounds, etc.

What you’ll do:

  • Do a lot of reference-gathering, contribute to the buildout of our core UI / UX, mature our design system, write code, use the latest and best in design tooling, and most importantly, dogfood our product every day

  • Review user analytics and observe what users do, vs just what they say. Then iterate quickly on designs

  • Keep raising our bar for craft and help us make Ando a product people love

Qualifications

  • Strong portfolio, with experience designing around LLM quirks and functionality

  • Recent experience coding with agents

  • Bonus points if you love prompt engineering

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
