POSITION SUMMARY
The Public Relations Specialist will enhance the organization’s public profile by managing media relations and supporting communication initiatives that strengthen trust among policyholders, stakeholders, and the general public. This position combines hands-on execution with strategic oversight, offering opportunities for professional growth and leadership development within a dynamic communications environment.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and execute PR strategies that align with organizational goals and public education efforts
- Lead development of integrated communication plans across media, stakeholder, and public channels
- Draft press releases, media advisories, talking points, and executive communications
- Cultivate relationships with journalists, media outlets, and community partners
- Manage external PR agencies and consultants to ensure alignment with brand and messaging
- Monitor media coverage and manage responses to inquiries and public issues
- Support crisis communications and reputation management efforts
- Oversee media training and crisis simulation exercises for executive and spokesperson preparedness
- Collaborate with internal teams on messaging for campaigns, events, and legislative updates
- Analyze campaign performance and media coverage metrics to refine future strategies
- Advise senior leadership on reputational risks and opportunities
- Apply strong public speaking skills in professional and external-facing engagements
- Navigate California’s insurance environment and public sector communications with working knowledge and context
- Assist in preparing spokespersons for interviews and public appearances
- Represent the Association at Town Hall events and other public speaking opportunities
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or related field
- 6+ years of experience in public relations, media relations, or strategic communications required
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, drive performance and foster a positive work environment
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
