Own the reliability of a deployed humanoid robot fleet by diagnosing hardware, firmware, controls, and telemetry failures. Perform hands-on actuator and electronics repair, design test fixtures and mechanical modifications, build fleet health metrics and calibration tooling, analyze robot logs, improve observability, validate firmware and software changes, and document procedures. The role requires strong Python, motor-control and actuator knowledge, hardware troubleshooting, time-series analysis, and cross-functional collaboration.

Dyna Robotics builds general-purpose robots powered by a proprietary embodied AI foundation model with top-in-industry generalization and real-world performance. Already deployed with customers across multiple industries, our robots do commercial-grade work in the physical world. Our team comes from Google DeepMind, Meta, and Cruise, and we're backed by CRV, First Round, and other leading investors.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Staff Robotics Systems Integration Engineer to own the hardware and systems health of our humanoid robot fleet, and to shape how our hardware strategy evolves as we scale.

This is an early, high-ownership seat. You won’t inherit a roadmap, you’ll help write it. You’ll set technical direction for fleet reliability, hardware qualification, calibration, and test infrastructure, and influence hardware decisions across mechanical, electrical, firmware, and controls.

It’s also genuinely hands-on. The same person who sets the long-term reliability strategy should be comfortable pulling an arm off a robot, probing a suspect driver board, soldering a fix, and designing the bracket that makes the repair stick. You’ll sit at the intersection of hardware, firmware, controls, and data, and you’ll be the person the team calls when a robot does something nobody can explain.

What You’ll Do
  • Own the roadmap. Define and drive the hardware reliability and integration priorities based on fleet data and customer impact.

  • Shape hardware strategy. Turn field evidence into input for next-generation actuator selection, electrical architecture, thermal design, and serviceability, and make the case for those changes with mechanical, electrical, and firmware partners.

  • Set the standards. Establish qualification, validation, and release practices (EVT/DVT/PVT-style gates, incoming test, pre-merge validation).

  • Root-cause complex failures. Actuator dropouts, encoder and calibration drift, thermal events, CAN bus faults, and control-stack bugs, separating true hardware degradation from firmware, calibration, and model-side causes.

  • Work hands-on with the hardware. Bench-test, rework, and repair actuators and electronics, and design and build the fixtures, jigs, brackets, and small modifications that go with them. Turn evidence on backlash, wear, preload, and hard-stop behavior into concrete design changes, in close partnership with the mechanical team.

  • Build fleet health systems. Health metrics and alerting tuned to real faults rather than noise floors, calibration and characterization tooling with safety gates, and telemetry pipelines for bandwidth-constrained robots (MCAP, npz, episode archives).

  • Raise the engineering bar. Review PRs across firmware, control code, and deployment config, and write runbooks, SOPs, and incident reports clean enough that a teammate can pick the work up cold.

What You’ll Bring
  • 7+ years in robotics, mechatronics, hardware test, or reliability engineering, with significant time on fielded hardware rather than lab prototypes.

  • A track record of owning technical direction: setting priorities, making hardware tradeoff calls, and influencing partner teams without formal authority.

  • Comfort with ambiguity. You’d rather define the problem and the plan than wait for them.

  • Hands-on instincts: soldering iron, multimeter, calipers, and the ability to tear down, repair, and re-commission electromechanical assemblies without waiting on another team.

  • Deep familiarity with how actuators fail mechanically (backlash, wear, preload loss, end-stop damage), and enough design sense to hold your own in a design review.

  • Working knowledge of robot control (impedance and torque-controlled actuators, controller state lifecycles) to recognize when a “hardware” fault is actually a controls bug.

  • Fluency with quasi-direct-drive actuators, encoders, torque and current telemetry, CAN, and calibration and zeroing procedures.

  • Strong Python for data analysis and tooling, with solid time-series instincts around noise floors, drift, and persistence rules, plus experience with Datadog or similar and PR-based workflows.

  • Rigor about evidence. You distinguish measured from commanded and correlation from cause, and you won’t set a baseline on contaminated data.

Bonus Points For
  • Experience with teleoperation systems, VR interfaces, or data-collection fleets

  • Hardware qualification (EVT/DVT/PVT) or manufacturing and incoming test experience

  • Experience as an early member of a hardware team or building a function from scratch

  • MuJoCo simulation sanity-checking

  • A track record of building tools and SOPs that other engineers actually adopt

At Dyna Robotics, we build technology for the real world, which requires a team as diverse as the environments our robots inhabit. We are an equal opportunity employer committed to technical rigor and mutual respect.

Don’t let a checklist stop you. Data shows that underrepresented groups often only apply if they meet 100% of the criteria. We value problem-solving and grit over keyword matching. If you’re passionate about robotics, no matter your discipline, we want to hear from you, even if you don't check every box.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
