Position Summary 

Under the direction of the Site Director, the Safety & Support Leader is responsible for monitoring the school grounds including the courtyard, restrooms, building interior, and surrounding grounds to keep students safe and engaged during the school day and out-of-school time programs. The Safety & Support Leader will assist the Site Director as needed, especially in the areas of behavior management and conflict mediation, using restorative practices and de-escalation strategies.

School Program Dates 

  • August 18, 2025 – June 3, 2026 

Job Responsibilities 

Student Supervision & Safety 

  • Monitor school grounds and ensure students are in appropriate program spaces. 
  • Report suspicious behavior to the Site Director. 
  • Provide behavioral support and implement progressive discipline as needed. 
  • Mentor students requiring intensive behavioral support. 
  • Facilitate restorative practices and de-escalation in collaboration with the Student Support Department. 

Program Coordination & Logistics 

  • Coordinate program logistics, including activities, parent communication, and other tasks as needed. 
  • Support enrollment and program attendance, assisting students who are not enrolled. 
  • Support program attendance goals and evaluation through the QAP and YPQA processes. 

Communication & Collaboration 

  • Maintain regular communication with Program Leaders and school leadership. 
  • Build proactive connections with school-day staff and teachers. 
  • Stay informed about current YMCA programs, services, and schedules. 

Program Activities & Development 

  • Support planning of and lead field trips and activities during early release days as requested. 
  • Participate in professional development and ongoing training. 

Work Environment & Physical Demands 

The Safety & Support Leader will spend significant time on school grounds, which includes both indoor and outdoor environments. The role may require standing for extended periods, walking, and occasional physical activity to ensure safety and student engagement. The position involves working in various weather conditions and responding to incidents in a fast-paced, dynamic school environment.

Salary Description 

The Safety and Support Leader position offers a compensation range of $20.40 – $24.00 per hour. This rate is based on salary benchmarking for similar roles and is aligned with grant fund approvals and requirements for the position.   

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications 

  • 21+ years or older. 
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • Must be available Monday-Friday during school and program hours, occasional weekend shifts. 
  • 1+ years of experience working with school-aged youth in an organized setting. 
  • 1+ year of experience in a community engagement, service, or support role. 
  • Experience working with diverse elementary or middle school youth. 
  • Skills in restorative practices and/or de-escalation training. 
  • Strong understanding of the theory and practice of youth development. 
  • Ability to engage with youth and build meaningful relationships. 
  • TB Test clearance within last 2 years.  

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Associate’s degree or higher. 
  • Security Guard Registration and/or Certified De-Escalation and Restraint Training. 
  • 2+ years’ experience working in diverse elementary or middle school settings. 
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Tagalog, or other languages preferred but not required.
