Job Description

POSITION TITLE

Senior Accountant

OVERVIEW AND REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

With general direction and latitude for independent judgment and discretion, this position performs professional level general accounting duties to maintain and administer the Company’s general ledger. Additionally, this position provides leadership and guidance to less experienced accounting staff.

REPORTING STRUCTURE & WORK SETTING

This position typically performs work in a centralized, corporate environment and reports to a Manager in Accounting with responsibility for the General Ledger but may assist the Assistant Controller or Controller on special projects.

OTHER REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • On an ongoing basis and with an excellent understanding of proper accounting practices and controls, this position supports the maintenance of the general ledger by ensuring proper and timely entering and recording of financial transactions in the general ledger in accordance with GAAP and Company policies.
  • Reviews accounts payable batches for accuracy, proper approval and account coding following Company standard practices and generally accepted accounting practices.
  • With a solid understanding of accounting practices and controls, develops and enforces proper accounting processes and procedures for practice within the department and Company. This includes developing and maintaining desktop procedures and manuals.
  • On an on-going basis, participates in the month-end close processes by performing activities that include but are not limited to preparing, reviewing and posting journal entries.
  • Provides technical guidance to the Accounts Payable team and other less experienced accountants. This includes responding to the account payable staff and less experienced accountants as needed to resolve accounting issues.
  • Proactively pursues business issues that impact the general ledger and evaluates the situation for acceptable solutions. Proposes resolution to management and other affected areas/departments. Incumbents may coordinate solutions of various scope and complexity with internal and external groups.
  • Assists with ongoing account reconciliation and specific projects by reviewing and researching assigned accounts. Ensures that general ledger accounts are resolved and reconciled. This may entail the review of account reconciliations with management.

MARGINAL DUTIES & ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists in audit planning and requirements to ensure smooth operations and processes.
  • Assists in the review and streamlining of necessary internal controls and processes.
  • Provides accounting support to the Controller and Assistant Controller on special projects as required or assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

No formal direct supervisory responsibility is entailed although this position may provide incidental direction, act as a resource for less experienced accounting staff as requested or assigned.

EDUCATION

Knowledge of finance and accounting as normally obtained through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting or a related major.

WORK EXPERIENCE OR RELATED EXPERIENCE:

The ability to proficiently perform professional level accounting research, analysis, reconciliation, and financial and accounting reporting work as normally obtained through four – eight years of experience working at a progressively responsible accounting role.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Accounting research, reconciliation, analysis and reporting skills are essential.

Good knowledge of the Company's accounting policies and procedures is required to perform the essential functions. Incumbents should have a strong working knowledge of GAPP and internal controls.

Good verbal and written communication skills are required to relay technical accounting information to non-technical people and act as a resource for less experienced accounting staff, as described.

Incumbents should have the ability to manage diversity and conflicting goals to achieve objectives. Good attention to detail and the ability to remain organized and focused is essential. Incumbents should have the ability to work independently on accounting projects with minimal direction and adapt to a rapidly changing environment.

Strong analytical skills are required as is the ability to research issues, prepare evaluations on problems and recommend viable solutions.

A strong work ethic and can-do attitude are very desirable.

Incumbents must be proficient with a personal computer and have advanced knowledge, understanding and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook). Additionally, Great Plains Dynamics or other enterprise system experience is desirable.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS & CONDITIONS

Travel is generally not required on a consistent basis for this position. However, travel is required during the fixed asset inventory check or as business needs dictate.
