The Senior Accountant supports the AMC’s financial operations through ownership of complex general ledger accounting, month end close activities, reconciliations and financial reporting in accordance with organizational policies and accounting standards. The role is responsible for key accounting areas including restricted funds, endowment, investments, capital assets, compliance filings, and audit support, and works cross functionally to strengthen processes, internal controls and the accuracy and timeliness of financial information.
This is a hybrid position, and candidates must be within commuting distance of the Boston office.
The role may also require flexibility during periodic peak workloads, particularly during monthly close, audits, and reporting cycles.
What You'll Be Doing at AMC
Core Accounting and Financial Reporting
- Lead assigned aspects of the monthly, quarterly and year end close processes, including preparing and/or reviewing journal entries, accruals, reconciliations and analyses
- Support accounting and reporting of revenue across programs and systems
- Ensure that accounting is performed in accordance with organizational policies and procedures and accounting standards
- Identify accounting issues and recommend resolutions
- Ensure documentation supports audit and control requirements
- Evaluate accounting workflows and internal controls; recommend and implement process, system and technological improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy and consistency
- Develop and/or maintain accounting procedures and documentation for assigned areas
- Manage assigned responsibilities accurately and within established timelines, escalating issues and competing priorities as needed
Investments
- Manage the investment inbox and maintain organized, audit ready investment documentation
- Coordinate the processing, funding, and tracking of capital calls and related investment activity
- Record quarterly investment activity and maintain key reconciliations, including investment rollforwards and investment cash activity
Accounting for restricted funds
- Manage restricted fund balances in accordance with donor intent and record releases from restriction accurately and timely
- Coordinate with accounting, development, and program teams to support proper recording and use of restricted funds and provide timely balance updates to stakeholders
- Maintain endowment schedules, including fund documentation and purpose, spending classifications, and allocation of investment income
- Support and advance efforts to enhance expense tracking for all restricted funds, including grants, and provide budget managers with meaningful, accurate reports
AMC Published Books
- Record and reconcile monthly accounting activity related to book distribution operations
- Prepare biannual royalty reports and coordinate timely royalty payments
- Maintain book inventory accounting and related reconciliations to ensure accurate balances and reporting
Capital Projects and Fixed Assets
- Manage accounting for capital projects, including assigning project codes, monitoring activity, performing reconciliations, and maintaining reports for management use
- Maintain the fixed asset ledger and related depreciation schedules, ensuring additions, disposals, and transfers are recorded accurately and timely
Audit and Compliance Support
- Coordinate assigned aspects of the annual financial statement audit, including preparing schedules, responding to auditor requests, and ensuring timely completion of deliverables
- Prepare supporting schedules and analyses for Form 990 and other compliance filings, including tracking lobbying activities and related disclosures
- Prepare and support timely compliance filings for local, state, and federal agencies
Cross‑Functional & Operational Support
- Provide cross training and backup support for cash receipts and accounts payable processes, as needed
- Provide guidance, training or review support to less experienced accounting staff, as assigned
- Serve as an accounting resource to development, program, operations, and other departments for assigned areas
- Communicate accounting requirements, deadlines, and fund balance information to internal stakeholders
- Partner with management to support reporting and analysis needs
- Leverage technology in performance of work and support digital transformation projects, as requested
- Perform other projects and duties as assigned
What AMC is Looking For
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
- 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience
- Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close and financial reporting
- Experience with complex nonprofit accounting, such as restricted funds, endowments, and investments
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a deadline‑driven environment
- Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with a major accounting system (Sage Intacct preferred).

Salary range
Boston Based: $66,157 - $89,265
Other Northeast Based locations: $57,528 - $77,622

The initial salary represents our starting point, and our compensation philosophy is designed to reward and recognize the contributions of our employees as they grow within the organization. External candidates typically begin their journey with us at the starting point of the salary range. The final compensation offer will be based on factors such as experience, education, skills and geographic differential relevant to the position, and will be discussed during the interview process.
