About the Role:
Wing is looking for a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our Ground Systems Engineering team based in Palo Alto, CA.
This role will directly contribute to building and scaling the systems that enable safe and efficient drone operations worldwide, specifically focusing on our commercially-facing services and uncrewed air traffic management. You'll work on complex challenges at the forefront of aviation and technology, helping to get Wing's drone delivery into the hands of more partners and customers. Our mission in Ground Systems is to build safe, reliable, and scalable systems with a detail-oriented mindset, allowing our business to expand while always delivering a customer-first experience. This position seeks highly-motivated individuals who enjoy working in a highly dynamic and collaborative team environment. A successful candidate will be able to identify areas in need of investment, set solution strategy, influence team direction, and have direct impact through their technical contributions, cutting through ambiguity, and designing and building complex systems. We’re looking for people who are intrinsically driven to collaborate on hard problems, drive simple solutions, and take pride in their team's work.
What You’ll Do:
- Engineering Design: Set engineering design strategy for yourself or a limited number of peers, cutting through ambiguity, and pre-empt complicating factors ahead of time.
- System Design & Development: Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain large-scale, distributed software systems including: asynchronous pipelines, database systems, RPC handlers in collaboration with frontend engineers and backend engineers, in a privacy and security conscious ecosystem.
- Navigate Ambiguity: Investigate and build software in areas with limited expertise and make an immediate impact.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with business partners, product managers, designers, and program managers to design, implement and launch new features
- Incident Response & On-Call: Participate in an on-call rotation to address urgent production issues, troubleshoot complex problems, and implement long-term solutions.
- Team Culture: Contribute to a team culture of support, engagement and quality, ensuring Wing can scale as a business.
What You’ll Need:
- 8+ years of experience designing and developing backend software.
- A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a similar degree (or equivalent experience).
- Excellent written and verbal skills and experience working in a collaborative team.
- Ability to identify and independently solve challenging problems. Demonstrates high accountability and ownership over the implemented solutions.
- Experience developing backend systems involving database schema design, and synchronous/asynchronous systems
- Proficiency in C++, or ability to quickly pick up C++ with experience in similar languages like Java, or C.
