Job Summary:
We are seeking a Project Engineer with strong design experience supporting Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) yards. This role is hands‑on and technically focused, supporting the electrical design and execution of grid‑connected BESS projects from concept through construction and commissioning. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in cable sizing, protection schemes, and electrical integration between BESS equipment and substations or utility interconnections.
This position works closely with EPC teams, OEMs, utilities, and internal multi‑discipline engineering groups to deliver safe, compliant, and constructible BESS designs.
What you'll do:
BESS Electrical Design & Engineering
- Support the detailed electrical design of utility‑scale and large C&I BESS yards, including MV/LV systems, PCS/inverters, transformers, and auxiliary systems
- Perform and review cable sizing calculations for MV and LV power, control, and grounding systems based on thermal limits, voltage drop, short‑circuit, and installation conditions.
- Develop, review, and support Protection schemes including relay selection, coordination philosophy, and interface with utility protection requirements
- Prepare and review one‑line diagrams, three‑line diagrams, cable schedules, grounding plans, and electrical layouts
Interconnection & EPC Coordination
- Support utility interconnection design, including interface points between BESS, collector systems, and substations
- Coordinate with EPC contractors and OEMs to review technical submittals, compliance matrices, and design clarifications
- Assist with protection and control coordination between BESS equipment, substations, and grid intertie facilities
Codes, Standards & Safety
- Ensure designs comply with NEC, IEEE, UL 9540 / 9540A, NFPA 855, IEC, and applicable AHJ and utility standards
- Support electrical safety, grounding, and protection philosophies aligned with EPC and utility best practices

- This position pays between $100K and $150K annually and is an exempt position. Benefits offered include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) plan with company match. HSA or FSA medical accounts and FSA dependent care and transportation/parking accounts are also available. These benefits are subject to employee contribution amounts generally set annually. Full-time employees are eligible to earn PTO hours. May be eligible for discretionary bonus as determined by the company.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related discipline
- 5+ years of electrical or power engineering experience
- 4+ years of direct experience with BESS, renewables, or utility-scale power projects
- Experience working in an engineering consulting, EPC, or utility advisory role
- Strong knowledge of medium- and high-voltage systems and substation-connected assets
- Strong understanding of BESS yard electrical architecture and grid interconnection concepts
- Experience working with utilities, EPC contractors, and equipment vendors
