We are seeking an experienced Senior Coastal Engineer, Scientist, or Resilience Planner to help grow and lead our coastal practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated professional who is eager to build client relationships, guide impactful projects, mentor emerging talent, and serve as a visible leader in one of the nation's most dynamic coastal regions.

As Stantec's local coastal presence in the Bay Area, you will join a collaborative team of engineers, scientists, planners, and resilience practitioners working on projects across the United States and Canada. Together, we help clients develop innovative and sustainable solutions that strengthen coastal communities and ecosystems.

Your Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and contribute to coastal engineering, resilience, adaptation, and restoration projects throughout the Bay Area and beyond.
  • Help grow Stantec's coastal practice by building relationships with clients, agencies, and project partners.
  • Manage projects, including scopes, budgets, schedules, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Develop coastal adaptation plans, engineering studies, technical analyses, and design solutions.
  • Support and lead proposal pursuits and business development initiatives.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff while fostering a collaborative team culture.
  • Represent Stantec in the coastal community through professional engagement and thought leadership.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • We are looking for candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Coastal flood risk management and natural Hazards
  • Coastal hydrodynamics and morphology
  • Coastal vulnerability, and adaptation planning
  • Design and analysis of coastal structures, ports, harbors, and waterways
  • Coastal management, environmental restoration, and enhancement
  • Nature-based solutions to address coastal ecosystem restoration and sea-level rise adaptation and resilience.

You are an experienced professional who combines technical expertise with strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills. You enjoy working collaboratively, mentoring others, and helping clients solve complex coastal challenges.

Education and Experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of experience in coastal engineering, planning, environmental science, environmental policy, geography, landscape architecture, or a related field; or an advanced degree with 15+ years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in coastal engineering, resilience planning, adaptation, or related disciplines.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Experience working directly with clients and developing business opportunities.
  • Familiarity with the coastal regulatory and planning landscape in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Located in the Bay Area or willing to relocate

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD in Civil, Coastal, Environmental Engineering, Planning, Environmental Science, Geography, or a related field.
  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in California or American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification.
  • Strong project management experience, with the ability to organize and rally a diverse team to execute projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Established relationships with coastal clients, local public agencies, and regional stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success winning and delivering coastal engineering, resilience, adaptation, or planning projects in the San Francisco Bay Area.

About the Team
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.

Benefits Summary: Regular full-time and part-time employees (working at least 20 hours per week) have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term/long-term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage and paid family leave. Regular full-time and part-time employees will receive ten paid holidays in each calendar year. In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law).

Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.
