Job Summary

TYLin is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Electrical Engineer (Traction Power) to support and lead complex Rail + Transit infrastructure projects across the Mid-Atlantic region, serving agencies such as WMATA, VRE, MDOT MTA, Amtrak, and other regional transit authorities.

The Opportunity
This role is ideal for a senior-level traction power specialist with deep experience in DC and/or AC railway electrification systems, substation design, and power distribution for heavy rail, commuter rail, light rail, or streetcar systems.
You will provide technical leadership, design oversight, and project delivery expertise across planning, preliminary engineering, and final design phases, ensuring compliance with agency standards, AREMA guidelines, NFPA, NEC, IEEE, and other applicable codes.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

What You’ll Do:

Technical Leadership & Design

  • Lead the design of traction power systems, including:

    • Traction power substations (TPSS)

    • Rectifier and transformer systems

    • DC switchgear and AC distribution

    • Overhead catenary system (OCS) power interfaces

    • Third rail power systems

    • Negative return, stray current mitigation, and grounding/bonding systems

  • Perform and oversee load flow, short-circuit, voltage drop, harmonic, and coordination studies.

  • Develop design criteria, technical specifications, drawings, and calculations.

  • Conduct design reviews and ensure QA/QC compliance.

Project Delivery

  • Serve as Engineer of Record (as applicable).

  • Coordinate with civil, structural, track, signals, and systems disciplines.

  • Interface with utility companies and transit agency stakeholders.

  • Support construction services, including RFIs, submittal reviews, and field inspections.

Client & Business Development Support

  • Support proposals and technical pursuits for regional transit agencies.

  • Participate in client meetings and technical presentations.

  • Contribute to strategic growth of the Rail + Transit practice in the Mid-Atlantic.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s preferred).

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (DC, MD, or VA preferred; ability to obtain reciprocity required).

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in traction power and rail electrification design.

  • Demonstrated experience with heavy rail, commuter rail, light rail, or streetcar systems.

  • Strong working knowledge of:

    • DC traction power systems (600V–1500V DC typical ranges)

    • AC utility interconnections (e.g., 13.2kV, 25kV, 34.5kV systems)

    • Protective relaying and coordination

    • Grounding and bonding for rail systems

  • Familiarity with WMATA, Amtrak, MDOT MTA, or similar agency standards is highly desirable.

  • Experience with ETAP, SKM, or similar power system modeling software preferred.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

TYLin is committed to pay equity. As part of that commitment, we have provided the base compensation range of $130,000 - $170,000 annually for this position and local market. We recognize that each candidate brings a unique set of skills, experience, education and competencies to the table that will be reflected in our offer.TYLin is proud to offer exciting career development opportunities.
