About Mux

Mux is video for developers. Our mission is to democratize video by solving the hard problems developers face when building video: video encoding and streaming (Mux Video), video monitoring (Mux Data), and more. Video is a huge part of people’s lives, and we want to help make it better.

We’re committed to building a healthy team that welcomes diverse backgrounds and experiences. We want people who care about our mission, are ready to grow, believe in our values (from Be Human to Turn Customers Into Fans), and want to improve the people around them.

You’ll join a tight-knit team with experience at places like Google, YouTube, Twitch, Reddit, Zencoder, Fastly, and more. Our founders previously started (and sold) Zencoder, an early leader in cloud video technology, and authored Video.js, the biggest HTML5 video player on the web. We organize Demuxed, the premiere conference for video engineers in the world.

We’re backed by top investors like Coatue, Accel, Andreessen Horowitz, and Y Combinator. You’ll get to work with amazing companies: hundreds of startups, plus Strava, Patreon, Vimeo, Robinhood, PBS, and Equinox. Customers, large and small, love working with us and love our team.

We are building something big together. We’d love to hear from you!

About the Role

The Senior Engineering Manager of Mux Video will lead and grow the product engineering teams responsible for developing and operating the Mux Video product. You will play a key role in shaping the technical strategy in close partnership with the product team, driving the execution of the product roadmap. Additionally, you will contribute to the scaling of our engineering organization, fostering a culture of growth and technical excellence.

You will guide your team through complex technical challenges across our globally distributed architecture, which handles thousands of requests per second and petabytes of content. You’ll help set the technical direction of our platform and collaborate with the broader engineering organization to continuously improve how we build and operate software.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the product engineering team responsible for building and running the Mux Video product, delivering all aspects of live and on-demand streaming: ingestion, encoding, storage, CDN delivery, and caching.
  • Foster a culture of psychological safety, inclusivity, and excellence, ensuring a high-performing and empowered team.
  • Oversee capacity planning, performance margins, and cost optimization for the services your team owns.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering leadership peers to support org-wide technical initiatives and evolve our technical strategy.
  • Represent Mux externally on technical topics relevant to your team, particularly in conversations with strategic partners and vendors.
  • Hire, retain, and develop top engineering talent, focusing on both technical growth and leadership development.
  • Drive the execution and accountability of projects, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery.
  • Advocate for operational best practices, ensuring availability, reliability, production readiness, and proactive management of technical debt.
  • Develop the technical and product strategy in collaboration with technical leads and product partners.

Who you are

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years of leadership experience managing technical teams.
  • Expertise in scaling and operating distributed systems running on cloud infrastructure, with a strong understanding of site reliability, service-levels, incident management, CI/CD, and automation.
  • Adept at driving decisions and aligning stakeholders in ambiguous or high-stakes situations, particularly when facing conflicting priorities or constraints.
  • Possess an entrepreneurial mindset—self-directed, innovative, and biased toward action. You thrive in building new things and excel in navigating ambiguity.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of collaborating across a remote-first organization and effectively conveying complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Passionate about mentorship and team development, with a track record of motivating and uniting cross-functional teams.
  • Experienced in leading both execution and cultural transformation initiatives.
  • Experience in media & video technologies is a plus but not required.

In our commitment to provide transparency with candidates, we openly share base pay ranges for all job postings within the United States, regardless of the state. These pay ranges are established using standardized criteria, including job function, level, and location. They're also benchmarked against similar companies in a similar stage of growth. The starting base pay for this position is between $230K-$280K . Actual pay is influenced by various factors such as location, skills, depth of experience, and internal equity.

If you don't have all of these requirements but think your experience could be a great fit, that's okay! Please apply and we can talk about what's most needed in the role.

U.S. Benefits

You'd join an amazing team from places like Google/YouTube, Amazon/Twitch, Facebook/Oculus, Reddit, Brightcove, Bain, and the BBC.
