At Docker, we make app development easier so developers can focus on what matters. Our remote-first team spans the globe, united by a passion for innovation and great developer experiences. With over 20 million monthly users and 20 billion image pulls, Docker is the #1 tool for building, sharing, and running apps—trusted by startups and Fortune 100s alike. We’re growing fast and just getting started. Come join us for a whale of a ride!

As a Senior Frontend Engineer, Design Systems, you’ll be joining a team working exclusively on Docker’s design system. You'll partner closely with two designers and another frontend engineer, and report directly to a Senior Design Manager. Your job is to make our design system a robust, scalable foundation for all of Docker’s products—Docker Hub, Docker Desktop, Docker Admin, and more.

We're currently using MUI but are planning a migration. You’ll help define what comes next, while supporting the existing MUI-based system as needed. You’ll also champion developer adoption by documenting patterns, offering guidance, and leading internal enablement efforts.

Responsibilities
  • Own the engineering roadmap for Docker’s design system

  • Work side-by-side with designers to implement components that match intended usage and visual fidelity

  • Lead architectural decisions to move Docker off a pre-built component library (MUI) and build a more flexible, future-ready system

  • Set up or improve testing frameworks (unit, integration, visual regression, accessibility)

  • Write internal documentation, host office hours/workshops, and provide support for other engineers using the system

  • Help review PRs, propose best practices, and contribute to internal tooling

  • Collaborate across multiple product teams to ensure the design system works across a variety of use cases and environments

Qualifications
  • Deep technical understanding of TypeScript, and JavaScript

  • Comfortable with React, Remix, and Electron

  • Strong proficiency in building and maintaining reusable component libraries

  • Prior experience working on or consuming a design system at scale

  • Familiarity with MUI and interest in migrating to alternative approaches (e.g. Tailwind, custom tokens/components)

  • Ability to define and enforce accessibility and testing standards

  • Empathy for designers and engineers alike—you know how to bridge the gap between design and code

  • Willingness to lead, mentor, and push back constructively when needed

What to ExpectFirst 30 Days
  • Meet your team: 2 staff designers, 1 frontend engineer, and your manager

  • Learn about current design system, how it’s used across our products, and understand user feedback

  • Start contributing improvements and fielding internal support questions

First 90 Days
  • Roll out your first pattern in the current system

  • Host a workshop or write internal documentation to promote usage

One-Year Outlook
  • Partner with our other engineer to propose and begin implementing a roadmap for deprecating MUI

  • Deliver a stable, well-tested system that’s used across Docker Hub, Desktop, and other products

Make other developers’ lives easier through better tooling, docs, and developer experience
