The Senior Hardware Test Engineer will be responsible for developing, executing, and sustaining hardware test and characterization strategies for camera modules, PCBAs, and related subsystems. This position requires strong hands-on board-level debugging skills, experience working across hardware and embedded system interactions, and the ability to translate complex test results into clear, actionable recommendations. The Senior Hardware Test Engineer’s primary customers are internal hardware, firmware, and manufacturing teams, enabling them to efficiently debug issues, validate performance, and improve product reliability from prototype through production. This role reports directly to Matterport’s Director of Manufacturing Engineering.

This position is located in Sunnyvale, CA and is in office Monday through Thursday and work from home on Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute test, validation, and characterization plans for camera modules, PCBAs, and related subsystems across prototype, engineering, and production builds.

  • Perform board-level debugging and root cause analysis of failing hardware, including sensors, power rails, clocks, high-speed interfaces, and supporting circuitry.

  • Diagnose and resolve issues across hardware, firmware, and system interactions in collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams.

  • Identify failure modes and provide recommendations for design, process, and test improvements.

  • Analyze test data, identify trends, and communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders in a clear, data-driven manner.

  • Develop and improve automation for test procedures and data collection to improve efficiency, test coverage, and data quality across engineering and production runs.

  • Set up, qualify, and maintain camera test infrastructure, including bench debug environments, characterization stations, and automated test software.

  • Support the transfer of test methods, equipment, and processes from engineering development into high-volume manufacturing.

  • Partner with hardware, firmware, image quality, and manufacturing teams to improve debug efficiency, yield, test coverage, and product reliability.

  • Create and maintain test documentation, debug procedures, and standard operating instructions.

  • Train technicians and operators on test equipment, software tools, and debug procedures.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited, not for profit, in person university or college.

  • A track record of commitment to prior employers

  • 5+ years of experience in hardware test, product validation, or failure analysis for cameras, consumer electronics, or other embedded hardware systems.

  • Hands-on experience with board-level debugging and common lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMMs, power supplies, and logic analyzers.

  • Experience troubleshooting PCBAs, sensors, power delivery, clocks, and hardware interfaces.

  • Ability to read schematics and debug hardware issues methodically.

  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and interpreting test data to support root cause analysis and engineering decisions.

  • Familiarity with Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, or similar tools for test automation or data analysis.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with hardware, firmware, and manufacturing teams.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to travel internationally up to 10%

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience with camera modules, imaging systems, or optical/electronic consumer devices.

  • Experience debugging embedded systems, including firmware interactions, board bring-up, and device communication.

  • Familiarity with interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, USB, MIPI CSI-2, or Ethernet.

  • Experience supporting hardware test through NPI builds and production ramp.

  • Experience with automated test stations, characterization infrastructure, or manufacturing validation workflows.

  • Experience working with contract manufacturers or overseas engineering / production teams.

  • Familiarity with image quality, sensor validation, or camera calibration workflows.

  • Experience creating structured debug procedures, test documentation, and operator-facing instructions.
