About the role
AllTrails is where the outdoors comes to life and this role is for an experienced design contractor who thinks the same way. In this project-based role, you'll partner with our Product Design team, you'll work at the intersection of craft, product thinking, and technical curiosity. You'll bring strong craft, product thinking, and technical curiosity to projects ranging from exploring user behaviors and iterating on features to using code and AI as creative tools. You'll work independently, collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, and own your deliverables from exploration through execution—helping us ship experiences that matter to millions of people who spend their lives outside.
This is a dual-level freelance opening (Senior or Lead) at 30 hours per week; the job title and hourly rate will be determined by the candidate's background and experience.
The ideal candidate will be available to start during the week of September 28, 2026, or October 5, 2026, and commit to the role through March 19, 2027.
What you'll be doing
Work in highly collaborative cross-functional teams to identify opportunities, make bets and decisions, and ship meaningful product updates
Bring strategic thinking to the team, with a proven ability to sequence execution and place informed bets
Craft experiences that effectively communicate membership value and scale across different markets with local relevance
Evolve overall design language of AllTrails, systemize visual and motion effects to guide user attention and confirm actions
Leverage AI tools with sound judgment, using front-end code as a medium to explore, communicate, and advance the work
Leverage and contribute to our evolving design system
What you bring
7+ years of professional experience researching, designing, and shipping consumer-facing digital product features across iOS, Android, and web (extensive B2C experience is a must)
Demonstrated successful experiences taking ideas from concept through release and learning from post-launch performance
Demonstrated ability to prioritize critical tasks, accurately estimate scope, and consistently deliver high-quality outcomes on schedule
Experience with qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
Able to facilitate constructive feedback and evolve designs to meet business objectives
Able to provide design direction and pattern recommendation to other cross-functional teammates
Expert at driving stakeholder buy-in for high-impact initiatives
Solid product execution driven by sharp visual, interaction, and motion design judgment
AI Fluency: you are skilled at creating effective prompts, supplying useful context, evaluating AI-generated output critically, and iteratively steer the result toward a high-quality product
Strong design systems thinking: you know when to use an existing pattern, extend it, or create something new; you balance speed with long-term system health
A strong digital presence with a demonstrated ability to engage and grow communities online
Possess strong branding and illustration skills, backed by with a solid understanding of color theory and visual storytelling
