The Senior Manager, Commercial Finance will be a strategic finance partner to business and commercial leaders, helping BetterHelp make better decisions across growth, revenue, marketing investment, pricing, health plan partnerships, unit economics, margin, and long-term business performance. And as a mental health company, we take employee mental health just as seriously as we do our mission. We deeply invest in our team’s well-being and professional development, because we know that business and individual growth go hand-in-hand. At BetterHelp, you’ll carve your own path, make an immediate impact, and be challenged every day – with a supportive community behind you the whole way.

What are we looking for?

This individual will support a business that spans both cash-pay subscription dynamics and insurance-covered healthcare economics. The ideal candidate must bring experience in digital / online mental health or closely related healthcare businesses, with a strong understanding of how healthcare revenue models work, including payer relationships, reimbursement dynamics, revenue cycle management, claims, collections, and the operational drivers that influence insurance revenue realization.

This is not just a reporting role. It is about understanding what is happening in the business, why it is happening, what it means, and what actions we should take. The Senior Manager will own key areas of planning, forecasting, performance management, business casing, and strategic analysis, while translating complex financial and operational data into clear recommendations for senior leadership.

The ideal candidate combines strong financial fundamentals with commercial curiosity, healthcare business acumen, analytical depth, business judgment, and strong communication skills. This person should be comfortable working through ambiguity, challenging assumptions, influencing cross-functional partners, and creating executive-ready work that helps drive real business decisions.

What will you do?
  • Serve as a strategic finance partner to commercial, operational, and business leaders, helping evaluate growth opportunities, investment decisions, business performance, and key trade-offs across both cash-pay and insurance-covered areas of the business.
  • Own and improve planning and forecasting for key areas of the business, including revenue, acquisition, retention, pricing, insurance mix, reimbursement, unit economics, marketing efficiency, margin, and other core business drivers.
  • Build and maintain driver-based financial models that support forecasting, scenario planning, resource allocation, business cases, and long-term strategic planning.
  • Analyze actual performance versus forecast / budget, identify the key drivers of variance, and translate findings into clear implications and recommended actions.
  • Develop business cases for new initiatives, products, pricing changes, partnerships, payer / channel opportunities, marketing investments, bundles, or other commercial opportunities, including financial impact, key assumptions, sensitivities, risks, and decision points.
  • Partner with business leaders to understand the underlying economics of their areas, including input metrics, output metrics, operational drivers, and how business activity flows through to revenue, margin, cash collection, and the P&L.
  • Support analysis of insurance-related business drivers, including payer mix, reimbursement rates, session economics, utilization, provider supply, claims performance, denial / rejection trends, collections, DSO, and revenue realization.
  • Conduct deep-dive analyses on complex business questions, such as customer acquisition economics, conversion, retention, cohort performance, CPA, LTV, channel mix, pricing, supply / demand dynamics, payer economics, and ROI.
  • Prepare executive-ready materials for weekly business reviews, operating reviews, quarterly updates, board discussions, and strategic decision-making forums.
  • Develop KPI reporting and performance management tools that help leaders understand business health, identify trends, and make better decisions.
  • Translate large datasets and complex analyses into simple, crisp narratives, charts, and recommendations that clearly answer the “what, why, so what, and now what.”
  • Partner effectively with Revenue Cycle, Operations, Data Science, Analytics, Accounting, and broader FP&A teams to ensure financial analysis is accurate, consistent, and grounded in reliable data and metric definitions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve models, reporting, processes, and decision-making tools, with a focus on scalability, accuracy, and business value.
  • Drive financial discipline across monthly, quarterly, and annual planning cycles, ensuring clear targets, accountability, ownership, and visibility into risks and opportunities.
  • Support ad hoc strategic projects and executive analyses that inform company-level decisions.
What will you NOT do?
  • You will NOT worry about "runway", "cash left", or "how much time we have until the next round". We have the startup DNA but we're fully backed and funded, all the way to success.
  • You will NOT be confined to your "job". You will get involved in product, marketing, business strategy, and almost everything we do.
  • You will NOT be bogged down by office politics, ego, or bad attitude. Only positive, pleasure-to-work-with people are allowed here!
  • You will NOT get yourself burned out. We work hard but we believe in maintaining a sustainable work/life balance. Really.
Can I work remotely?

Yes. We operate on PST and candidates in any time zone are welcome to apply. We ask employees to travel to our San Jose, CA office up to three times per year plus one company-wide offsite to collaborate in person and strengthen working relationships. Travel expenses are covered and reasonable accommodations are made for those under unique circumstances who cannot travel.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify the “question behind the question” and focus analysis on the business decision that needs to be made.
  • High data fluency, including comfort working with BI tools, large datasets, metric definitions, and cross-functional data partners. SQL, Looker, Python, or similar tools are a plus.
  • Experience working with AI / LLMs to automate repetitive work and improve the quality of our models and analyses.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create clear, concise, executive-ready materials.
  • Ability to synthesize complex financial, operational, and healthcare data into clear insights, implications, and recommendations for senior leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust with business partners, influence cross-functional stakeholders, and challenge assumptions constructively.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and committed to producing accurate, clean, high-quality work product.
  • Strong ownership mindset, with the ability to independently drive work forward, manage competing priorities, provide proactive updates, and know when to escalate.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment where priorities can shift and the right answer is not always obvious.
  • Strong judgment, maturity, and executive presence, including the ability to respond calmly and credibly to questions, challenges, and pushback.
