About the Team

OpenAI Finance is responsible for ensuring the organization is set up for success in pursuit of its mission.

The Tax team is a vital part of OpenAI, ensuring compliance with tax laws and regulations while optimizing the company's tax position. We work closely with various departments to provide tax insights and strategies that support the company's growth and financial objectives.

About the Role

We are hiring a Senior Tax Manager to oversee international indirect taxes. You will design and execute international tax strategies that enable OpenAI’s rapid growth while ensuring compliance across multiple jurisdictions. You’ll operate as both a strategic advisor and hands-on builder—leading international VAT/GST compliance, driving automation through ERP and AI-enabled tools, and partnering cross-functionally to embed scalable tax processes.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and implement indirect tax strategies to optimize tax efficiency and minimize risk across all lines of business, including new products and services, M&A, and new legal entity structures.

  • Oversee the accuracy and timely filing of all international indirect tax returns (VAT, GST, DST, excise taxes, property taxes, etc.) across multiple jurisdictions.

  • Ensure compliance with tax regulations and collaborate with internal teams to embed tax compliance into business systems and processes.

  • Manage tax audits and represent the company during examinations.

  • Drive the adoption and optimization of tax technology solutions, including tax engines, ERP systems, data tools (e.g. Alteryx, Power BI), and automation technologies (RPA).

  • Lead initiatives to improve data quality, enhance tax processes, and drive efficiencies for tax compliance and reporting.

  • Build strong relationships and effectively communicate with internal partners—Financial Reporting, Accounting, Legal, Product, among others—external tax consultants, and auditors.

  • Stay abreast of changes in global tax laws and regulations, anticipating impacts and adapting strategies proactively.

You might thrive in this role if you have:

  • 10+ years of progressive indirect tax experience, including in-house operational roles within tech or e-commerce environments.

  • Extensive experience in SaaS, PaaS, B2C indirect tax.

  • Proven expertise in international indirect tax regulations (VAT, GST, DST, excise taxes) in the EU; APAC and LATAM experience is a plus.

  • Experience with tax technology platforms (e.g. Vertex, OneSource, etc.) and ERP systems (e.g. SAP, Oracle).

  • Deep global audit experience with a fine sense of the types of arguments, legal strategies and inquiry and critical factual developments that can lead to optimal outcome.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with a track record of building and developing teams.

  • Familiarity utilizing GPTs and other AI tools to drive efficiency gains.

  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; a Master's degree in Taxation, Accounting, or a related field is a plus.

  • CPA certification or equivalent.

  • Law Degree is a bonus or an alternative to a CPA certification.
