The Senior Manufacturing Test Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and sustaining automated manufacturing test software and production test systems for camera modules, PCBAs, and related hardware subsystems. This position requires strong programming and scripting skills, experience with automation frameworks, instrumentation control, and production data analysis, and a passion for building scalable, reliable factory test solutions. The Senior Manufacturing Test Engineer’s primary customers are Matterport’s manufacturing partners and internal engineering teams, enabling them to deploy, operate, and improve test stations that support efficient calibration, validation, and high-volume production. This role reports directly to Matterport’s Director of Manufacturing Engineering.

This position is located in Sunnyvale, CA and is in office Monday through Thursday and work from home on Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and sustain manufacturing test solutions for camera modules, PCBAs, and related hardware subsystems across NPI and high-volume production.

  • Design and maintain test software, automation frameworks, and data collection pipelines used in engineering builds, factory bring-up, and production test stations.

  • Support root cause analysis of manufacturing test failures by analyzing test logs, system behavior, hardware performance, and process trends in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

  • Improve test coverage, test time, reliability, and scalability of manufacturing stations through software enhancements, automation, and data-driven process improvements.

  • Partner with hardware, firmware, product, and manufacturing teams to define test requirements, station behavior, pass/fail criteria, and production release readiness.

  • Develop and maintain tools for test sequencing, instrumentation control, results logging, traceability, and yield analysis.

  • Support integration of cameras, sensors, fixtures, and peripheral equipment into manufacturing test stations and factory workflows.

  • Drive structured validation and qualification of manufacturing test stations prior to deployment, including repeatability, GR&R, uptime, and error handling.

  • Analyze production data to identify failure trends, systematic escapes, station issues, and opportunities to improve yield and test robustness.

  • Support transfer of test stations, software, and processes from development into contract manufacturers and high-volume production sites.

  • Create and maintain documentation for test software, station architecture, validation results, debug procedures, and manufacturing release processes.

  • Train technicians, operators, and manufacturing partners on station operation, debug workflows, and test process changes.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited, not for profit, in person university of college.

  • A track record of commitment to prior employers.

  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing test, test automation, production engineering, or hardware test for embedded hardware products.

  • Strong programming and scripting skills in Python, C/C++, LabVIEW, or similar languages.

  • Experience developing or supporting automated manufacturing test stations.

  • Experience with instrumentation control, test sequencing, logging, and failure handling.

  • Experience analyzing production test data and logs to support root cause analysis and process improvement.

  • Familiarity with manufacturing test concepts such as yield, traceability, station validation, uptime, and throughput.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with hardware, firmware, operations, and factory teams.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to travel internationally up to 25%.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience with camera modules, imaging products, or other high-volume embedded hardware systems.

  • Experience supporting NPI to HVM transfer of manufacturing test stations and processes.

  • Familiarity with GR&R, false failure reduction, station repeatability, and test coverage optimization.

  • Experience with database logging, production dashboards, or test data pipeline development.

  • Experience working with contract manufacturers or overseas production sites.

  • Familiarity with PCBAs, sensors, embedded devices, and common production instrumentation.

  • Experience improving test time, station reliability, and factory debug workflows.

  • Experience with software architecture for scalable test frameworks or manufacturing station platforms.

  • Fluency in Mandarin is a plus.
