The Role

We're looking for a senior mechanical engineer who owns systems end to end: design, build, test, and all the parts in between. You'll help set the direction on mechanical architecture, make the calls that constrain everything downstream, and then be in the warehouse in Mountain View when the hardware needs to be run, measured, and fixed. This is a role for someone who has shipped physical products and knows what breaks between a clean CAD model and a working machine.

Please note that this role is located at our warehouse in Mountain View that will soon be relocating to Fremont, CA.

What You'll Do

  • Own mechanical design for major subsystems, from requirements through detailed design, tolerance analysis, and release.

  • Drive design for manufacturability and assembly. Select processes, work directly with machine shops and vendors, and make the cost and lead time tradeoffs.

  • Build, instrument, and run test rigs. Define what gets measured, analyze the data, and turn results into design changes.

  • Set standards the team builds on: CAD practices, part numbering, revision control, test documentation, and the review process that catches problems early.

  • Partner with engineers and cross-functional teams on integration, where most of the real problems live.

  • Work out of our warehouse in Fremont, CA on testing, bring up, maintenance, and repair of hardware in service.

What We're Looking For

  • 5 or more years designing and shipping mechanical hardware, with a track record of systems you owned through production, not just through design review.

  • Strong fundamentals: structural analysis, materials selection, GD and T, tolerance stack ups, and failure analysis.

  • Deep CAD command and real manufacturing fluency. You know what a machinist will call you about before they call.

  • Hands on test experience. You've built fixtures, instrumented hardware, and debugged problems that only show up on real parts.

  • Comfort in the shop and in the field. You're willing to do maintenance and repair work alongside design work.

What you need to know about the San Francisco Tech Scene

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area attracts more startup funding than any other region in the world. Home to Stanford University and UC Berkeley, leading VC firms and several of the world’s most valuable companies, the Bay Area is the place to go for anyone looking to make it big in the tech industry. That said, San Francisco has a lot to offer beyond technology thanks to a thriving art and music scene, excellent food and a short drive to several of the country’s most beautiful recreational areas.

Key Facts About San Francisco Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 365,500; 13.9% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Google, Apple, Salesforce, Meta
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, fintech, consumer technology, software
  • Funding Landscape: $50.5 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins
  • Research Centers and Universities: Stanford University; University of California, Berkeley; University of San Francisco; Santa Clara University; Ames Research Center; Center for AI Safety; California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
