Position Summary

Antora Energy is building thermal energy storage systems that deliver zero-carbon industrial heat and power at scale. We are seeking a self-driven, hands-on Process Engineer to help scope, define, and design balance-of-plant systems for Antora’s thermal energy storage projects across test, pilot, and commercial deployments.

As a key member of our engineering team, you will own process engineering deliverables for industrial-scale systems, including heat and mass balances, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, equipment requirements, and cross-functional design reviews. Your work will directly support the testing, scale-up, and commercial deployment of Antora’s novel solid-state thermal battery technology.

We are a tight-knit team that cares deeply about our mission, our technology, and one another. We work with humility, openness, technical rigor, and a bias toward action. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex first-of-a-kind engineering problems, collaborating across disciplines, and building practical systems that operate safely and reliably in the real world.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Define, develop, and own process engineering requirements and specifications for balance-of-plant systems, including heat and mass balances, Process Flow Diagrams, and Process & Instrumentation Diagrams.
  • Translate project, product, and system-level requirements into executable process designs for test and commercial thermal energy storage projects.
  • Review cross-functional engineering deliverables, including equipment specifications, piping layouts, instrumentation, controls concepts, and mechanical designs, to ensure alignment with process requirements.
  • Participate in process safety reviews, including PHAs, HAZOPs, HAZIDs, design reviews, and related risk assessment activities.
  • Perform engineering trade studies that balance performance, cost, manufacturability, operability, safety, and schedule.
  • Use both quick-turn analytical methods, such as spreadsheets and hand calculations, and more rigorous model-based approaches when appropriate.
  • Support the development and selection of industrial mechanical equipment, including pressure vessels, pumps, heat exchangers, air coolers, fans, tanks, piping, valves, and related process systems.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, thermal, fluids, controls, operations, manufacturing, and project execution teams.
  • Support commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of Antora’s thermal energy storage systems.
  • Apply AI tools thoughtfully to improve engineering workflows, including accelerating calculations, organizing design information, supporting documentation, improving review efficiency, generating first-pass analyses, and building repeatable workflows while maintaining strong engineering judgment and technical ownership.
Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in chemical, mechanical, process, industrial, or a related engineering field.
  • 8+ years of experience in industrial process engineering, applications engineering, plant engineering, or related roles in industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, power generation, thermal systems, or heavy industrial equipment.
  • Experience developing or owning process engineering deliverables such as heat and mass balances, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and process design basis documents.
  • Experience with industrial mechanical equipment, including pressure vessels, pumps, heat exchangers, air coolers, fans, tanks, piping, valves, and instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of relevant industrial mechanical design codes and standards, such as ASME Section I, ASME Section VIII Div. 1, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, API 650, API 610, TEMA, and ASTM standards.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to approach problems from a first-principles perspective.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented startup environment.
  • Proven ability to operate across multiple engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, thermal, fluids, controls, and systems engineering.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to drive alignment across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Curiosity and practical enthusiasm for using modern AI tools to improve engineering productivity, documentation quality, analysis workflows, and team knowledge-sharing.
Additional Qualifications Desired "Nice to have" but not required
  • Deep engineering experience and intuition in one or more of the following areas:
    • High-temperature thermal systems
    • Energy storage systems
    • Power generation or energy conversion systems
    • Molten salt systems
    • Industrial process systems
    • Heat transfer systems
    • Thermal-fluid systems
  • Experience using engineering design, modeling, or simulation tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, COMSOL, ANSYS, Aspen Plus, HYSYS, Python, MATLAB, or similar.
  • Experience supporting field commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, or operations of industrial process systems.
  • Experience with first-of-a-kind technology development, pilot systems, or scale-up from test systems to commercial deployment.
  • Professional Engineer license in a relevant discipline.
