Sole designer on a Brand Product squad owning end-to-end product design: user discovery, research, prototyping, and production-ready specs. Partner closely with engineers, contribute to the design system and brand standards, prioritize accessibility, and share craft and AI-augmented workflows across the design org.

*This role is open to remote or hybrid candidates (East Coast preference), with hybrid being central to our New York, NY or Charlotte area offices. Must be able to work Eastern Standard Time hours.

The Brand Product squad at Bankrate is a small, fast-moving team building the user-facing product experience that defines how people interact with who Bankrate is. You'll be the sole designer on the squad — working alongside engineers — responsible for the full arc of design work: from customer discovery through polished, production-ready delivery. We're looking for a designer who moves with the curiosity of a researcher, the precision of a craftsperson, and enough technical confidence to partner with engineers as a real equal. This is a role for someone who wants to own a product end-to-end and see their decisions matter immediately.

What You’ll Do:

  • Product Discovery & Research: Get close to users before picking up a tool. Run discovery sessions, use AI to accelerate synthesis, and frame problems worth solving. You're comfortable conducting user interviews and usability tests without a dedicated researcher, and you bring that insight back into the product — not just into a Figma frame.
  • End-to-End Design Execution: Own design from early ideation through delivery in whatever form the solution requires. Figma is the whiteboard, not the destination. Finished work might be a prototype, a component in living code, or a high-fidelity spec — whatever moves the team forward fastest. AI tools are an active part of how you explore, prototype, and iterate: not a shortcut, but a way to move faster without moving sloppily.
  • Technical & Systems Fluency: Bring enough comfort with the codebase and tooling to be a real partner to engineers. Active in agentic coding tools (Cursor, Copilot, etc.), working knowledge of GitHub, and familiar enough with component libraries like shadCN, Tailwind, and Next.js to design with what's actually being built. Contribute to design system decisions — you understand that system decisions are product decisions, and you treat them accordingly.
  • Brand & Experience Standards: Apply and help evolve Bankrate's brand and experience standards across everything your squad ships. On this squad, brand experience and product experience are the same thing — you're accountable for both, and accessibility is part of that bar.
  • Design Culture & Craft: Contribute to raising the craft of the design org. Show up to critiques prepared to give and receive sharp feedback. Share what you're learning — tools, AI workflows, prompts, patterns — and make it useful for the people around you, not just your own practice

What We’re Looking For:

  • Product thinker: Your portfolio shows evidence of shaping design decisions through discovery — not just executing briefs. You know the difference between a discovery finding and a design opinion, and you use both correctly.
  • High and consistent craft: Your work is detailed, intentional, and finished across many types of problems. You hold a high standard for yourself and treat accessibility as part of craft, not a compliance check.
  • Technical comfort: You're comfortable enough with front-end concepts to have a real conversation with engineers — not just hand off specs and hope. You know your way around GitHub, you've used agentic coding tools, and you understand how component-based systems shape what's buildable. Technical curiosity is non-negotiable.
  • Clear, proactive, and collaborative: You don't wait to be pointed at problems. You surface them, propose a path, and move. You communicate design decisions well, take feedback without getting precious, and make it easy for engineers and PMs to work alongside you.

Compensation:

Total Cash Compensation Range: $110,000 – $150,000 per year

Who We Are:

Bankrate is where Americans go to get the best price on life's most important financial decisions. By combining proprietary data, advanced technology, and deep market coverage, Bankrate helps consumers compare options and make confident financial choices across mortgages, credit cards, savings, and more. As a rate provider to the Federal Reserve and the benchmark relied upon by major publishers and policymakers nationwide, Bankrate's rate data is the national standard. This commitment to precision is reflected across all its products. In mortgages, proprietary auction technology puts lenders in real-time competition on price alone, consistently delivering rates in the lowest 10% in the country. For deposits, the platform features exclusively top-tier rates in the top 10% nationally, while its credit card coverage encompasses more than 90% of the market by volume. Founded by a journalist, Bankrate remains dedicated to its founding mission of transparency, honest information, and real competition — helping to make the American dream more affordable for everyone.
