Lead the transfer of silicon photonics wafer and die testing from R&D into high-volume production. Design and execute automated optical and electrical test solutions, manage OSAT production launches, define procedures, train operators, oversee hardware and software transfers, and improve yield and test time. Operate low-volume test stations, develop automation and analysis software, coordinate test schedules, and support next-generation photonic and RF testing. The role is onsite in Santa Clara and San Jose with occasional international travel.

The Role

As a member of OpenLight’s R&D Test Engineering team, you’ll work closely with a team of experienced engineers in transferring Photonic Integrated Circuit wafer test solutions from R&D to production, specifically in transferring wafer and die testing to production, preferably with the Advantest 93K ATE tester and automated wafer probers.

What You Will Do

You’ll be responsible for designing, implementing, and executing test solutions to validate the functionality of Silicon Photonics devices and Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC), mainly at the wafer level on automated wafer probers. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in optical and electrical device testing with experience in designing custom test hardware and programming in python. The position is onsite at our Santa Clara CA office and our San Jose CA laboratory.

  • Lead the transition from low-volume testing to production. Partner with test engineering and outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) partners to establish production test requirements and support a successful manufacturing handoff.

  • Serve as program manager responsible for running our low-volume wafers through test and burn in at a local OSAT, as well as initial management of high-volume OSAT test

  • Review our low-volume test solution hardware and software and advise on design changes need for high-volume production

  • Transfer high-volume production to an external OSAT, manage the BOM and equipment shipments, OSAT training, software and data transfer, and be the first point of contact for troubleshooting.

  • Train OSAT operators, program managers, and technicians

  • Work with product and test engineers on yield improvement and test-time reduction

  • Define the complete SOP for the backend process at our OSATs

  • Occasionally travel internationally to OSATs and other partnering companies

  • Specify custom hardware designs to our suppliers (e.g., probe cards)

  • Work with the test engineer team on designing the next generation of silicon photonic wafer and die production with active optical positioning and integrated RF testing

In addition to your work transforming our test environment from R&D to production, you will also work in our low-volume environment as a senior member of our test team.  Specifically, you can expect to:

·       Operate the local test stations for low-volume production runs

  • Test automation software in C++ or Java, and conduct test analysis software in Python

  • Manage schedules for test execution, communicating with internal and external customers on the test plans, results, and project status

Your Background Includes
  • You understand what it takes to develop reliable, repeatable, high-throughput automated test processes that support a successful production launch. You have helped transform experimental testing into a robust manufacturing test solution, understanding the pitfalls that emerge along the way, including optical alignment repeatability, RF and optical calibration, test time, measurement variability, yield characterization, equipment limitations, and the challenge of maintaining accuracy and consistency across production volumes.

    • An advanced degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering

    • Advantest 93K and automated wafer prober production test experience

    • Wafer probe card design

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

    • Initiative and ability to work independently

    • If you have experience photonics and high-speed RF testing, especially at the wafer level; Python, C++, and/or Java programming experience; and/or a background in integrated optics, jump to the head of the line!
