Senior Software Engineer, Early Clinical Development

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our Early Clinical Development (ECD) department at Roche/Genentech. In this role, you will contribute to the development of innovative software solutions, enabling the acceleration of early clinical trial development and ultimately bringing life-changing medicines to patients faster. You will work alongside and learn from experienced engineers within the ECD Clinical Insight and Automation (CI&A) team, fostering a culture of technical growth, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

The Opportunity:

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will make a significant impact by:

  • Designing & Delivering: Taking ownership of the design and delivery of robust data flows and applications across key domains in Clinical Trial Development.

  • Technical Excellence: Upholding technical best practices and refining our application architecture and data ecosystem by implementing modern, cloud-first development design patterns.

  •  AI Integration: Developing and implementing software which integrates with generative AI models appropriate for our data, moving beyond simple adoption to active implementation.

  • Enabling Analytics: Delivering integrated data sets and facilitating model implementation to enable advanced analytics and AI/ML capabilities.

  • Collaboration: Building and maintaining strong working relationships with key stakeholders and technical leaders across the organization.

  • Engineering Strategy: Contributing to engineering decisions to reduce technical debt, improve code quality, and develop common solutions across domains.

  • Advancing Interoperability: Designing and implementing global applications that integrate seamlessly across workflows in Clinical Trial Development.

  • Innovation: Following AI/Software developments at Roche/Genentech to identify new opportunities and build scalable solutions.

  • Mentorship: Mentoring junior software engineers and peers, sharing knowledge, and fostering a collaborative team environment.

Who You Are:

We are looking for an individual contributor who is passionate about advancing technology and

creating impactful solutions. You are someone who thinks critically, delivers on commitments

with autonomy, and thrives in a collaborative environment.

To be successful in this role, you should have:

● Experience: 5+ years in Python server-side development and 3+ years with front-end

frameworks and a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a similar

technical field.

● Technical Depth: Strong technical knowledge of modern software engineering, cloud

platforms, and data storage solutions, with experience in building scalable web

applications. Understanding of Generative AI and machine learning, with experience

deploying AI-integrated systems.

● Project Execution: A proven track record of delivering complex technical projects,

making sound technical decisions, and collaborating effectively with multiple teams.

● Communication: Excellent communication and partnership skills, with the ability to

articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and foster a collaborative

environment.

● Full-Stack Expertise: Strong technical background in building robust data pipelines, web

applications, and full-stack solutions (front-end, back-end, databases - JavaScript,

React, Vue.js, Python, SQL).

● Modern Practices: Skilled in modern software engineering approaches (cloud-native

design, APIs, microservices, event-driven systems) and familiarity with clinical trial

development field and associated systems (EDC, Veeva Systems).

● Mindset: Strong project management skills with a focus on completion; passionate about

technical excellence, product usability, and reducing complexity.

Onsite presence on our South San Francisco campus is expected for at least 3 days a week.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $156,200 - $290,200.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
