Outschool’s mission is to inspire kids to love learning. In our fast-changing world, the traditional educational system struggles to meet the diverse and evolving needs of young learners. Outschool reimagines this system, offering flexible and engaging learning experiences as a supplement and alternative to traditional education. By connecting learners with a global community of teachers and peers through our online platform, we make learning personal, dynamic, and deeply human.
We've made significant strides since launching our marketplace of live online classes in 2017. Finding initial success with secular homeschoolers, we then expanded to enrichment learning to meet the needs of a wider audience, growing our business 16x since 2019. Post-pandemic, we have evolved our platform to power academic learning, incorporated AI, and have begun to grow our international community. We're proud to have served over 1.5M passionate learners with more than $100M in annual bookings. We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Fullstack to join our Product Engineering team in South Korea. The team’s mission is to build high-quality product experiences that help learners, families, and educators connect and succeed on Outschool. You'll own challenging problems across the stack, from designing intuitive user experiences in React, to building scalable backend systems and APIs, to evolving our data models and architecture, to improving product quality and performance, to using AI-native tools and approaches to help us build and iterate faster.
We are an effective team of engineers distributed across the US, Canada, and South Korea. Our philosophy is to start small and then intentionally iterate to test our assumptions and learn quickly. We're iteratively building up a complex product for a highly engaged audience.
This role requires working from our Haeundae, Busan office Tuesday–Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Mondays are remote.
Our Stack:
- Product Engineering
- TypeScript · React · Node.js · GraphQL/Apollo · PostgreSQL · OpenSearch
- Our engineers work across the full stack, from building polished user experiences to designing APIs, data models, and backend services.
- Infrastructure & Developer Platform
- AWS (EKS, RDS, S3, Lambda) · Terraform · GitLab · Prometheus/Grafana · OpenTelemetry
- Product engineers partner closely with our Infrastructure team and are empowered to understand, deploy, and operate the systems they build.
- AI-Native Development
- We use AI throughout the software development lifecycle, including planning, implementation, testing, debugging, and code review.
- We're also actively incorporating AI into the Outschool product and exploring new ways AI can improve learning experiences for families, learners, and educators.
Core Responsibilities:
- Product development: Build high-quality product experiences for learners, families, educators, and partners across the full stack, from React and TypeScript in the frontend to GraphQL, Node.js, PostgreSQL, and backend services.
- Technical ownership: Own projects from problem definition through design, implementation, launch, and iteration. Make pragmatic technical decisions that balance speed, quality, maintainability, and user impact.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with Product Managers, Designers, Researchers, Analysts, and other Engineers to shape requirements, explore solutions, and deliver the right product—not just implement predefined specifications.
- Architecture & engineering quality: Design scalable, maintainable systems and APIs. Improve application architecture, testing, performance, observability, and engineering practices as the product and team grow.
- AI-native development: Use AI tools throughout the development workflow to move faster and improve quality, and help identify opportunities to incorporate AI into Outschool's product and learning experiences.
- Production ownership: Deploy and operate the software you build. Participate in on-call, investigate production issues, and use monitoring and user feedback to continuously improve reliability and product quality.
- Technical leadership: Raise the engineering bar through thoughtful code reviews, technical discussions, documentation, and mentoring. Help other engineers make strong technical decisions and grow their skills.
- Continuous improvement: Identify friction in our product, codebase, and development processes and proactively improve it. Look beyond the immediate task to make the team and platform more effective over time.
Desired Experience & Skills:
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong experience building modern web applications with React, TypeScript, and Node.js
- Experience designing and building APIs and backend services, ideally using GraphQL, REST, or similar technologies
- Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including data modeling and query design
- Experience owning complex technical projects from design through implementation, launch, and ongoing operation
- Understanding of software architecture, testing, performance, reliability, and maintainability in production systems
- Experience collaborating closely with Product Managers, Designers, and other engineers to shape solutions, not just implement requirements
- AI-forward approach: you actively use AI tools in your workflow, can prompt effectively, validate output critically, and know when to override or take a different approach
- Ability to provide technical leadership through code reviews, design discussions, documentation, and mentoring other engineers
- Intermediate or higher English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills; our interview process and daily engineering work are conducted in English
Other Considerations:
- Experience in EdTech or building products for learners, educators, or families
- Familiarity with search and discovery systems
- Familiarity with payment APIs (e.g. Stripe)
- Experience at a fast-paced startup or high-growth company
Benefits in South Korea:
- Coworking office located directly at exit 11, Jangsan Station in beautiful Haeundae, Busan.
- Necessary equipment (MacBook, monitor, etc.) and software for work provided
- Finish work early in the day - working hours from 7AM - 3PM.
- Flexible vacation, use whenever you like. Korean national holidays plus 15 extra days per year.
- Invitation to join the annual company retreat once per year (flight to United States, hotel, meals paid for by company).
- Shared Financial Success: Competitive salaries, stock options, and retirement plans
- Health: Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance
- Wellness: Annual wellness stipend, access to coaching & therapy, and pet wellness plans
- PTO & Family Benefits: Generous PTO and family leave policies
- Hybrid & Remote-Friendly: Outschool has a distributed team across the U.S. and Canada and an office in San Francisco. Bay Area-based employees work in the office part of the week and receive commute-related benefits. Team members outside the Bay Area remain fully remote, with support for expensable home office setup and internet to stay connected no matter where you are.
- Lifelong Learners: Annual budgets for professional development and DEI learning; budgets for children to take Outschool classes
- Community Impact: Outschool matches employee donations to eligible charities and supports Outschool.org’s nonprofit programs
