About Splash

Splash brings people and communities together through the gamification of live sports and events. We nurture, foster, and inspire the competitive spirit that lives within us all - one season, one game, one play at a time. With a variety of sports categories and pool formats to choose from, our websites are the premier spots for hosting friendly competitions against friends and family. We're a small, quickly growing, and remote-first team, looking for talented people who love sports and tech startups!

The Role

This is a full-time, remote job on our engineering team. You'll own the money side of Splash. That covers deposits and withdrawals, entry fees and payouts, fraud checks, and the double-entry ledger that ties every cent back to a player wallet and a contest.

You'll build and run the backend services that move real money through our web and mobile games. Finance and Compliance will lean on you a lot. You'll work with them directly so the books close clean every day, and you'll own our integrations with payment processors and with KYC and fraud vendors.

It's a backend job first. Our services run on NodeJS and TypeScript in AWS, and you'll work alongside engineers in the US and Prague.

Location: This is a remote role and you need to be based in the US.

What You'll Own
  • Ledger: Design and grow our double-entry ledger and wallet services. You'll own the account structure, covering player cash, promo balances, contest escrow, house accounts, and processor clearing.
  • Deposits and withdrawals: Build payment flows for cards and ACH, plus whatever processors we add next.  This means working with partners to understand API versioning and new feature rollouts including idempotent APIs, webhook handling, retries, refunds, chargebacks, and payout orchestration.
  • Contest money: Own the accounting for entry fees, rake, prize pools, promos, and private contest fees.  This must be exact and you must work with game ops and marketing to understand updates in promotions
  • Fraud and risk: We run real-time risk checks on every deposit and withdrawal, and on contest entry where it matters. Examples include velocity limits, device and identity signals, KYC and AML gating, geolocation, and responsible gaming limits. When a case needs a human, you will interface with our Trust and Safety team.
  • Reconciliation: Automate daily three-way reconciliation. The ledger has to match processor settlement reports and bank statements. When it doesn't, the break gets flagged and routed before Finance has to ask.
  • FinOps data: Feed clean ledger and transaction data into our Snowflake and dbt warehouse. Finance uses it for GGR, handle by state, tax reporting, and cash position.
  • Correctness and audit: Exactly-once posting and safe concurrency are table stakes.  You must keep audit trails that hold up when a regulator or a processor comes asking.
  • On-call: Take your turn on call for payment systems. Big sports weekends are when it counts.
You Must
  • Care a lot about getting money right. Rounding errors and race conditions bother you. A one-cent break bothers you more.
  • Work well on your own and on a small team. You write and talk clearly, which matters when everyone is remote and some of your closest partners work in Finance.
  • Be a self-starter with a strong work ethic.
  • Troubleshoot well. You can pick apart a system you've never seen, including a processor's odd behavior or a messy settlement file.
  • Follow good engineering and security practice. For this job that includes PCI-aware handling of payment data and least-privilege access to financial systems.
  • Make smart trade-offs. Know when to build for the long run and when to ship something simpler. Also know which shortcuts are off the table when money is involved.
  • Be up for startup life. We keep core hours, and big sporting events sometimes mean evening work.
  • Be excited to use the latest AI tools to make yourself and the team faster.
You Have
  • 5+ years of backend engineering, including at least 2 years on production payments, fintech, wallet, or ledger systems that moved real money.
  • Familiarity and a passion for regulated real-money gaming like DFS, sportsbook, iGaming, or peer-to-peer contests. Bonus if you've handled state-by-state compliance and geolocation.
  • Hands-on experience designing a ledger system. You're comfortable with accounting basics like debits and credits, chart of accounts, accruals, authorization versus settlement, and reconciliation.
  • Experience integrating payment processors, including webhooks, idempotency keys, chargebacks, and settlement reports.
  • Experience building or running fraud and risk controls, such as rules engines, velocity checks, KYC and AML vendor integrations, and manual review tools.
  • Proficient with NodeJS with TypeScript.
  • Deep knowledge of relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL. You understand isolation levels and locking, and you know how to design schemas for append-only financial data. Your SQL is strong.
  • Experience running scalable, highly available services in AWS, including PostgreSQL on RDS.
  • Strong automated testing habits, including property-based or invariant tests for financial logic. You're at home with Git and the rest of the standard toolkit.
  • A computer science degree or equivalent experience.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with escrow or custodial account models, where you hold player funds on someone else's behalf.
  • Exposure to responsible gaming controls and tax reporting (W-2G, 1099).
  • Event-driven systems work with SQS/SNS or Kafka, plus outbox patterns for reliable financial events.
  • Familiarity with Snowflake and DBT, or time spent partnering with data teams on finance reporting.
  • Proficiency with React for building internal tools like review queues and reconciliation dashboards.
Compensation & Benefits

As a Splash team member, you'll receive a comprehensive compensation and benefits package that includes:

  • A competitive annual salary range of $150-185k. This range may be modified, and final compensation may vary based on work experience and skill level
  • Potential to earn equity in the company
  • Medical, Dental, & Vision Insurance
  • 401K/Retirement Plan Options
  • Flexible PTO
  • Annual company retreats & team offsites
  • Frequent company-wide games with cash prizes
  • An exciting opportunity to be a part of the fast-growing fantasy sports industry, where you'll help build products for millions of fans across the country!

Splash is committed to creating an inclusive work environment.
