About Blumira and Our CultureBlumira is the security operations platform built for growing teams and partners supporting them, integrating comprehensive visibility, tools, and expert guidance to give IT and security teams peace of mind from knowing they never have to go it alone. Every business needs strong security and deserves tools built for them, not just the largest enterprises. In helping them, we help their customers, and, overall, make the Internet a safer place.
Our team is passionate about putting resilience in reach for every organization and team, keeping the business running smoothly and helping teams build their own expertise through daily security practice. To realize our vision, we're looking for inquisitive and driven teammates, like you! Be part of a friendly and supportive team that embraces who you are and offers you the opportunity to help build and scale the Ann Arbor tech security scene and to learn and grow with experienced SaaS security leaders. You will have the ability to make a big impact in the initial build of Blumira’s Engineering organization and take Blumira to the next level!
As a Senior Software Engineer at Blumira, you will leverage your extensive experience to architect, author, and improve software for our SaaS security product. You take ownership of complex, ambiguous problems and drive technical solutions that align with team and organizational goals. You provide technical leadership and mentorship while being equally effective working independently or leading cross-functional initiatives. At Blumira, we solve problems quickly to support our customers; you'll balance the pursuit of correct, clean, and performant systems with the need to adapt rapidly in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities- Architect, design, develop, and maintain highly scalable applications and services that support Blumira's data processing, storage, and detection mechanisms
- Break down complex, ambiguous requirements into iterative, deliverable components and guide implementation strategies
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions that meet business objectives
- Contribute to technical roadmap planning and architectural decisions
- Develop proof-of-concepts and prototypes to influence technical decisions, estimates, architecture, and system design
- Discovery, Scope & Alignment: Lead the technical discovery phase for new initiatives to uncover risks, dependencies, and architectural constraints. You proactively translate these findings into realistic scopes and actionable roadmaps, ensuring the cross-functional team understands feasibility before development begins.
- Drive code quality initiatives, establish best practices, and ensure comprehensive testing coverage
- Lead technical initiatives and provide guidance on complex infrastructure issues, driving improvements in automation around internal issue detection and response
- Mentor engineers and contribute to the technical growth of the team through code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge sharing
- Proactive Risk Management: Take initiative to keep stakeholders informed of project health. You communicate risks, blockers, and necessary scope adjustments immediately—rather than waiting for scheduled check-ins—to prevent surprises and ensure smooth delivery.
- Proactively identify, prioritize, and lead efforts to reduce technical debt and improve system reliability
- Communication & Collaboration: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to proactively drive conversations around technical discovery, constraints, and estimates to build consensus with non-technical stakeholders.
- 6+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 2+ years in a senior or lead capacity
- Advanced expertise in SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (e.g., Redis, MongoDB) databases, including complex data modeling, schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning
- Deep experience with web frameworks such as Flask, Django, or equivalent, with demonstrated expertise in designing robust RESTful APIs
- Demonstrated leadership abilities with a strong work ethic - you enjoy building impactful solutions, driving results, and enabling team success
- Expert-level proficiency in designing, building, and maintaining highly scalable backend applications, services, and APIs using Javascript, Python, Go, or Java
- Expertise in writing testable, maintainable code with comprehensive unit and integration test coverage
- Extensive hands-on experience with cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, AWS, Azure), including infrastructure design and cloud-native architectures
- Proven track record of building high-performance, production-grade services with strong understanding of optimization techniques and best practices
- Strong proficiency with git, CI/CD pipelines, containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), monitoring, observability, and logging tools
- Background in security, threat detection, or cybersecurity domains
- Contributions to open-source projects or technical community involvement
- Experience designing and implementing complex integrations with third-party APIs, including ongoing maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting
- Experience with event-driven architectures, message queues, and distributed systems
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) and DevOps practices
Prior experience working in a startup or fast-paced environment
- Competitive compensation and stock equity plan
- Unlimited PTO
- A flexible work environment that supports working from home
