The Google DeepMind Agents team is seeking a Senior Staff Research Engineer to help drive the development of AI agents within Google DeepMind. In this senior role, you will create cutting-edge AI agents capable of multimodal understanding, planning, and tool use. You will collaborate closely with research scientists and engineers to ship the latest agent innovations including hybrid agent architectures, orchestration, multimodality, tool integrations, memory and personalization.

The DeepMind Agents team is responsible for developing AI agents, including Astra (our next gen universal assistant), agent platform, and agent ecosystem.

The Role:

As a Senior Staff Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of AI agents. You will design, develop, and deploy AI agents that are capable of multimodal understanding, planning, and tool use. This includes Astra (our next gen universal assistant), agent platform, and agent ecosystem. You will be responsible for driving innovation, ensuring technical excellence, and fostering a collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop AI agents capable of multimodal understanding, planning, and tool use.
  • Partner with Google product teams to ship Agentic applications across Google products.
  • Identify, implement and ship the latest agent innovations including hybrid agent architectures, orchestration, multimodality, tool integrations, memory and personalization.
  • Oversee the technical direction and execution of projects, ensuring high-quality code and efficient development practices.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in the field of AI Agents and identify opportunities for innovation.
  • Contribute to the overall strategic direction of AI agent development in DeepMind and across Google

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS, MS or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong understanding of machine learning and deep learning algorithms.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage engineering teams.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the design and development of AI agents.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems and cloud computing.
  • Track record of publishing research papers in top-tier AI conferences.
  • Experience with real-world applications of AI agents.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering best practices.
  • Passion for the advancement of artificial intelligence and its positive impact on society.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $235,000 - $350,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
