Mill is a waste prevention technology company reimagining what it means to eliminate waste, starting with food. We build smart systems and infrastructure for homes, businesses, and municipalities that transform food scraps from landfill-bound waste into valuable resources, including chicken feed. Tens of thousands of Mill’s residential food recyclers are already helping households divert millions of pounds of food scraps every year, paving the way for our upcoming launch of Mill Commercial—the industry’s first end-to-end solution for managing, understanding, and preventing food waste in commercial environments (e.g. grocery, restaurants, food services). At Mill, we are passionate about building easy-to-use, beautifully designed technologies that keep food in the food system and out of landfills.

As a Software Quality Engineer, you will join a small team to own quality for the consumer and enterprise experiences our customers rely on: our website, our iOS and Android mobile apps, our e-commerce flows, and the enterprise software behind Mill Commercial. You will work cross-functionally with software, hardware, and product teams.

AI-assisted development is core to how we build software, not a peripheral tool. We expect daily fluency with tools like Claude Code, for example to write and maintain test automation, generate test cases from requirements, and triage failures. As a senior engineer, you will also help set the team's standards for using these tools well, including how AI-generated tests are reviewed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with leaders across the company to define requirements and feature requests, and translate them into comprehensive test plans.
  • Design and execute test cases and test plans for consumer web, mobile app, and e-commerce features.
  • Design and execute test plans for enterprise software, including multi-user accounts, roles and permissions, reporting and data accuracy, integrations, and scale and reliability for business customers.
  • Test our iOS and Android apps across devices, OS versions, screen sizes, and network conditions, and validate app releases before they ship.
  • Test web experiences across browsers and devices, including responsive layout, accessibility, and performance.
  • Build and extend our test automation framework, and write automated tests for web, mobile, enterprise, and full-stack scenarios that mimic real-world customer behavior and give broad coverage.
  • Validate how the apps and web experiences work with our cloud services and connected devices end to end.
  • Partner with SDET, software, cloud, firmware, and hardware teams and Technical Program Managers on validation, bug triage, and improving the end-customer experience.
  • Partner with Product Managers to develop and validate customer scenarios, analyze failures, and review device metrics from field trials.
  • Champion product quality at every stage of development, including CI/CD and deployment.
  • Help set team practices for using AI-assisted tools in testing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years in software development and quality assurance.
  • Experience testing consumer-facing web, mobile (iOS and/or Android), and e-commerce products.
  • Experience testing enterprise or B2B software.
  • Strong foundation in software quality fundamentals: test planning, test design, and automation.
  • Hands-on experience with Python and/or Java.
  • Proven ability to write your own automation framework and automated tests using pytest and other tools (for example Playwright or Appium), and to drive increased test coverage.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including documentation and test architecture diagrams.
  • Daily use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code in your workflow.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience testing with our specific stack: React Native (mobile), AWS Lambda with CDK (TypeScript)
  • Experience testing connected or hardware-paired consumer products.
  • Experience at startups or in rapid prototyping environments.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies, version control systems (for example GitHub), and CI/CD pipelines.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $150K to $170k, which does not include the value of benefits or a potential equity grant. A wide range of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, market conditions, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs.
