A Specialty Lending Senior Professional facilitates the specialty loan underwriting and portfolio management processes for prospective and existing customers of Private Bank and Wealth Management. This is primarily accomplished through working with the Sales, Product and Credit Risk teams to discuss, analyze, and recommend optimal lending solutions and ongoing credit monitoring that align with Private Banking and Wealth Management customer strategies, while conforming to bank and regulatory policies and procedures.  In order to discuss and resolve risk related issues, Senior Professionals will independently interact with Senior Management, Sales Teams, Credit Officers and Debt Restructuring Group. Senior Professionals are expected to independently review financials and make recommendations for approval of new requests, annual reviews, renewals and/or modifications. 

This role performs functions supporting Private Bank and Wealth Specialty Lending in underwriting, credit approval and ongoing portfolio monitoring  to include the annual review processes for the Specialty Lending portfolio of Private Bank and Wealth Management. The position processes straightforward to complex credits with sophisticated personal/family and corporate organizational structures, documentation and/or collateral structures.

The incumbent will be expected to serve as a role model and will be able to  mentor/train others on the team. This individual must balance the need to add profitable credit business while maintaining acceptable portfolio credit quality. This role works diligently and independently to offer innovative solutions, partner with internal colleagues and always keeps the customer experience top of mind. Takes a consultative approach and be willing to challenge the status quo and think proactively. Demonstrates understanding of Private Bank and Wealth Management lending products. Models behaviors that exemplify superior customer service. Demonstrates consistency in meeting target performance goals.

Primary responsibilities include

  • Evaluates appropriateness of loan structure for new loan requests and works with Sales Team, Credit Risk and Underwriting Manager as needed to meet client needs while ensuring Bank’s credit risk profiles are maintained.

  • Assume the responsibility to protect and preserve the integrity of individual portfolio while sustaining profitability, accurately assessing and managing risk, and managing the annual review process by means of recommendation for approval; assures compliance with Bank Credit Policy.

  • Applies credit skills, product knowledge, industry analysis, and sound judgment to assess and manage credit risk effectively.  Credit experience and skill set should range from standard to complex credit structures as it may relate to organizational aspects, financial analysis, collateral analysis, loan documentation and reviewing/testing covenants. 

  • Exhibits knowledge of various types of loan terms, structures, and conditions and understanding of loan documentation. Has extensive knowledge of credit policies and in particular application of the policies to a variety of situations 

  • Consistently adheres to all Service Level Agreements and regulatory compliance requirements. 

  • Accurately test covenants and recognize various events of default while assisting with the recommendation and implementation of strategy and action planning.

  • Effectively maintains high quality credit file documentation in a paperless environment. Effectively tracks and monitors financial statement requirements; reviews loan to assure compliance with all conditions of approval or LTV requirements. 

  • May participate in direct client contact, as appropriate, to gain a thorough understanding of the underwriting analysis.

  • Adhere to internal underwriting processes and procedures, including timely and accurate data integrity.

  • Responsible for working with Private & Wealth Specialty Lending Team members on Internal / External audit field work requests and/or remediation plans.

  • Specific tasks may include: Produce a high quality, concise, thoughtful Credit Proposal Summary and relevant appendices on a timely basis with analysis and documentation sufficient for the risk level to include understanding of financial statement causation factors and the borrower’s ability to repay, sponsor/guarantor analyses, being able to readily explain risk ratings, being able to accurately identify policy exceptions, special approval items, underwriting guidance variances, and risks/mitigants. Running financial (profitability and risk rating) models using a variety of formats/systems, surfacing liquidity and leverage concerns.

  • Additional areas of responsibilities will include workflow, client knowledge, communication and risk and regulatory compliance and testing areas.


Qualifications, Education, Certifications and/or Other Professional Credentials

  • Required Qualifications
    • 6+ years of experience and exhibited competency in various aspects of commercial lending /portfolio management including strong level of knowledge of financial analysis and credit structuring, understanding and applying credit policy, and credit monitoring and risk administration practices
    • Comprehensive credit skills with experience in a wide array of complex credit transactions. Strong cash flow and financial statement analysis skills 
    • Standard knowledge of loan and related legal documents. Must be skilled in proposing and negotiating and approving credit and covenant structures. 
    • Able to maintain good communication across business unit and broader organization
    • Bachelors degree in related field required
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • 3+ years of experience in a Private Banking / Wealth Management and/or hybrid Business Banking role,  or experience in specialty lending areas common to high net worth clients preferred 

Hours & Work Schedule

  • Hours per Week: 40
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday
  • 4 Days in Office and one flex; can be based in one of several locations - Johnston, RI; Boston, MA; or NYC.
