Basic Function

OVERVIEW:

Manages high-profile, larger or strategically important investments within the regional portfolio.  Oversees all aspects of individual venture capital investments including investment strategy, sourcing, evaluation, development of investment memoranda, negotiation, execution, portfolio management, performance reporting, and exits of deals.  

Actively contributes to portfolio company governance, strategy and performance. 

SCOPE:

Identifies and executes opportunities within their defined region in conjunction with the global AV team.  Focus is on investments relevant to the AV investment scope in North America.

  • Duties &Origination
    Develops and maintains deep networks within the start-up and venture capital (VC) communities, industry, and innovation centers. 
    Sources deal flow through multiple channels – networks, conferences, trade press, and desk research. Prioritizes deal flow based on quality, fit, strategic value considerations and economic soundness. Represents AV in industry events and via speaking engagements.  
  • Investment
    Actively leads and participates in Investment Thesis generation and maintenance and organizes team members to deliver and maintain this work product.
    Independently leads opportunity assessment, development of negotiating strategies, transaction structuring, due diligence and transaction execution for corporate venture capital investments.
    Recommends stage-gating decisions for new investments and presents opportunities to AV management.
    Builds relationships with start-up management, co-investors, and board members to effectively position AV as a leading investor and to develop and lead transactions.
    Drafts term sheets and investment memoranda for new investments. Leads presentations for all stage-gates of the investment process, including Sense Checks, Fast Forwards, the Management Advisory Committee (MAC), the Investment Advisory Committee (IAC) and the AV Guernsey board. 
    Interfaces with legal counsel and advisors during diligence and development of transaction documents.
    Ensures compliance with AV investment process guidelines.
    Builds a portfolio of investments meeting AV financial and strategic objectives.
    Key contributor to regional investment strategy development. 
  • Portfolio Management

Participates with deal-lead responsibility and AV board appointee for multiple complex, strategic, or high-profile investments.
Maintains relationships with co-investors, board members, and investee management.  Provides value-add to portfolio via strategic and operational guidance, networking, fundraising, and business development support.
Recommends stage-gating decisions and negotiation for follow-on investments and exit transactions and recommends shareholder actions to meet AV financial and strategic objectives.
Identifies and catalyzes exit opportunities for the portfolio in a way that maximizes absolute value creation.
Drafts term sheets, investment memoranda and presentations to MAC/IAC and the AV Guernsey Board for follow-on investments and exits. 
Ensures effective transaction execution for follow-on investments and exits.  

  • Reporting & Communication
    Provides visibility and objective reporting of portfolio company performance to regional and HQ AV management via verbal and written communications.    
    Ensures transaction documents are on file and maintained. Junior staff management: As directed by Managing Director, responsible for managing junior staff members including day-to-day management and writing appraisals and reviews.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's and Master’s degrees preferably combining engineering/science and management/finance disciplines from a reputable university.  from leading institutions.
    Professional certifications in desired skills areas are an advantage.
    Extensive understanding of technical and market trends in the energy sector.
    Understanding of ethics as it relates to investment and corporate governance.
  • Ability to:
    • Develop investment thesis.

    • Provide sector-specific expertise.

    • Collaborate across functions.
  • Typically, at least fifteen years of experience combining venture capital, corporate venture capital, corporate development, consulting, investment banking, private equity, start-up leadership or related fields.
    Typically, at least ten years in venture capital or corporate venture capital with extensive networks within the regional energy venture capital community.
    Extensive hands-on investment experience across the full venture investment lifecycle, including exits and investee board experience.
    Experience in energy or industrial sectors.  International experience desirable.
  • Must be able to comprehend and communicate accurately, clearly and concisely in English.

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $200,000 - $300,000. Final base salary for this role is based on several factors, including the individual’s geographic location, experience level, skill set, training, licenses and/or certifications.
