TEAM & ROLE

Benepass is scaling rapidly, and the complexity of our product surface demands senior engineers who can bridge product vision and technical execution. This Senior Frontend Engineer will be an impact multiplier: leading frontend architecture decisions, breaking down large initiatives into clear technical approach documents and milestones, and mentoring other engineers while raising our technical bar and using AI as a force multiplier while still being thoughtful about it’s output.

They will work primarily in React and TypeScript, building and maintaining our web application surfaces, and will have the opportunity to spread across the stack to contribute to our React Native mobile app on iOS and Android. We're looking for a strong web engineer who has strong attention to detail, curiosity about increasing velocity and impact with AI without hindering quality, and is excited to extend their reach into mobile — comfort with (or curiosity for) React Native is a meaningful plus, and you'll have the support to grow those skills here. However, the team has two mobile engineers so deep expertise is not required.

You will:
  • Lead the creation of technical approach documents that define architecture, system interactions, trade-offs, and execution plans.

  • Be a fluent adopter of AI tools, actively using AI coding assistants and emerging tooling to accelerate development, raise quality, and continuously rethink how engineering work gets done.

  • Partner early in product discovery with Product, Design, and engineering leaders to clarify goals, evaluate options, and recommend a technical approach.

  • Take ownership of front-end initiatives across web (component architecture, state strategy, performance considerations, help define API contracts).

  • Spread across the stack to build and maintain features in our React Native mobile app, improving cross-platform consistency between React web and React Native mobile.

  • Strengthen testing practices and uphold security standards across web and mobile surfaces, including secure data handling, authentication flows, and sensitive financial information.

  • Contribute to release reliability across surfaces (build tooling, versioning, CI/CD, and—on mobile—TestFlight and store submission flows).

  • Guide teams through execution of agreed-upon approaches, ensuring work is delivered with high quality, precision, and in a timely manner.

  • Bring forward strong architectural ideas, evaluate trade-offs, and influence system direction.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to mid-level and senior engineers.

  • Identify and drive improvements to system stability, performance, developer experience, and engineering practices.

OUR TECHNOLOGY AND STACK

JavaScript/TypeScript, React, React Native, iOS Native (Swift/Objective-C bridging), Kotlin, Python, Django, Django Rest Framework, PostgreSQL, AWS, Kubernetes.

REQUIREMENTS
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant time spent building production web applications.

  • Strong expertise in React and TypeScript, including hooks, context providers, Suspense boundaries, and component composition patterns.

  • Experience shipping and maintaining production front-end systems through the full release lifecycle.

  • Strong system design instincts for front-end architecture, including state management, data fetching patterns, and navigation/routing.

  • Experience improving performance, reliability, and maintainability of user-facing systems, such as rendering performance, animation smoothness, and load/startup time.

  • Eagerness to learn across the stack and contribute to React Native mobile surfaces; prior React Native experience (or hands-on native experience in Swift, Kotlin, Objective-C, or Java) is a strong plus but not required.

  • Experience working on high domain complexity systems such as financial services, secure payment flows, or similarly regulated environments.

  • Experience working within CI/CD pipelines and modern release workflows

ABOUT YOU

Product & Architecture Leadership

  • Partners closely with Product, Design, and other engineers to translate ambiguous ideas into actionable, valuable solutions.

  • Shapes technical direction early in the discovery process, evaluating multiple approaches and trade-offs through technical approach documents.

  • Ensures architecture decisions balance user needs, speed of delivery, and long-term maintainability.

Technical Excellence

  • Independently designs and implements performant, scalable front-end applications in React.

  • Comfortable leading projects that span multiple screens/views, navigation flows, shared components, and API integrations.

  • Understands web platform constraints — rendering performance, bundle size, accessibility, and browser compatibility.

  • Designs systems that are resilient under growth — increased users, offline scenarios, varying network conditions, and expanding feature complexity.

  • Proficient in debugging front-end issues including performance profiling, memory management, and platform-specific rendering differences.

  • Uses appropriate design patterns and abstractions to reduce complexity without over-engineering, with a focus on cross-platform code reuse where practical.

  • Writes automated tests at the right level (unit, integration, E2E) and maintains high coverage.

Execution & Ownership

  • Drives initiatives with minimal oversight, breaking work into clear milestones.

  • Anticipates edge cases and production risks before they happen.

  • Ensures quality through testing strategy, thoughtful reviews, and strong acceptance criteria.

  • Balances delivery speed with long-term code health.

  • Improves engineering velocity by refining patterns, shared components, and tooling (CI/CD pipelines, build optimizations, developer experience) across web and mobile.

  • Contributes to documentation and runbooks that support smooth onboarding and maintenance.

Collaboration & Mentorship

  • Clearly communicates trade-offs to non-engineering stakeholders.

  • Mentors mid-level engineers and provides structured, actionable feedback.

  • Raises concerns constructively and proposes concrete alternatives.

  • Communicates progress, risks, and decisions clearly across teams.

COMPENSATION
  • Base salary of $170,000 to $200,000 + equity.

Range(s) is subject to change. Benepass takes a number of factors into account when determining individual starting pay, including market comparables, interview performance, peer compensation, and years of experience. What We Offer

Benepass is proud to be an equal-opportunity employer.
