What You Will Contribute:
 

The Senior Software Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and supporting scalable software solutions that power Badger Meter's connected products and digital platforms. This role serves as a technical leader on complex projects, partnering closely with Product Management, Quality Assurance, DevOps, and other engineering teams to deliver high-quality software that meets customer and business needs.

The successful candidate will contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis and architecture through implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing support. This role also helps drive technical innovation, mentors engineers, and promotes engineering best practices across the organization.

Essential Job Duties

Software Architecture & Development

  • Analyze product and business requirements and translate them into technical specifications and software designs.
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy high-quality software solutions using modern software engineering principles and practices.
  • Lead technical design discussions and provide architectural guidance for new features and products.
  • Write clean, maintainable, scalable, and well-documented code.
  • Participate in code reviews and promote best practices for software development.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across applications and services.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful delivery of software products.

Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level software engineers.
  • Influence technical direction and contribute to engineering standards, processes, and best practices.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions that improve product performance, scalability, security, and maintainability.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the software engineering organization.

Project Execution

  • Participate in project planning, estimation, and risk assessment activities.
  • Provide regular status updates on project work, milestones, dependencies, and technical risks.
  • Balance multiple priorities while meeting project timelines and quality expectations.

Quality & Testing

  • Partner with Software Quality Assurance teams to define testing strategies and acceptance criteria.
  • Support automated testing, continuous integration, and continuous deployment initiatives.
  • Ensure software solutions meet performance, reliability, security, and maintainability standards.

Customer & Product Support

  • Assist technical support teams with complex product issues and root cause analysis.
  • Participate in product beta testing and customer investigations when required.
  • Provide technical expertise during critical customer escalations.

Documentation

  • Create and maintain technical specifications, architecture documentation, design documents, and other engineering artifacts.
  • Document software features, APIs, and system integrations to support ongoing maintenance and future development.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain confidentiality of company intellectual property and customer information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related STEM field.
  • 7+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Experience designing and developing commercial software applications.
  • Strong proficiency in one or more modern programming languages such as Python, C#, Java, JavaScript, or similar.
  • Experience with cloud-based platforms and distributed systems.
  • Agentic mindset with a proven track record of leveraging AI coding tools— such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or OpenAI Codex — to meaningfully accelerate delivery, not just as a novelty but as a core part of your workflow
  • Experience working within Agile software development environments.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, object-oriented design, testing methodologies, and source control systems.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with AWS, Azure, or other cloud platforms.
  • Experience developing SaaS, IoT, analytics, or data-driven applications.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or serving as a technical lead.
  • Experience working with scalable, high-availability systems.
