Position Summary

The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the accounting and financial operations of a full-service resort property. This position ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial information through the analysis of revenue, cash activity, balance sheet accounts, and operating results. The Staff Accountant works closely with the Property Controller and resort leadership to provide timely financial reporting, account reconciliations, variance analyses, forecasting support, and operational insights that support informed business decisions.

The ideal candidate will possess Marriott hospitality accounting experience, strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced resort environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Reporting and Analysis

  • Review and analyze resort revenue activity to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established accounting policies and procedures.
  • Analyze daily, weekly, and monthly financial performance across all operating departments and revenue centers, including rooms, food and beverage, spa, retail, parking, and other ancillary resort operations.
  • Prepare and distribute financial reports, variance analyses, forecasts, and management summaries for resort leadership and ownership groups.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Analyze financial trends and operational performance to identify opportunities for improved profitability and operational efficiencies.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and periodic forecasts.

Account Reconciliations and Cash Management

  • Prepare timely and accurate bank reconciliations for all operating and deposit accounts.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations and account analyses for assigned general ledger accounts.
  • Reconcile cash, credit card receivables, merchant settlements, prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities, guest ledger accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Track daily cash collections and deposits to ensure all cash received by the resort is properly deposited, recorded, and reconciled to bank activity.
  • Investigate and resolve cash overages, shortages, deposit discrepancies, and other variances.
  • Monitor daily cash activity and investigate unusual transactions or variances.
  • Assist with cash flow monitoring, forecasting activities, and cash management reporting.
  • Research and resolve reconciling items and accounting discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all reconciliations are completed accurately and within established month-end closing deadlines.

Revenue and Operational Accounting

  • Review and analyze daily revenue reports and related accounting transactions.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies involving revenue reporting, cash transactions, credit card activity, and other financial variances.
  • Work closely with resort operating departments to verify revenue integrity and financial accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and Marriott reporting requirements.

Property Controller Support

  • Fully assist the Property Controller in all aspects of hotel accounting and financial operations.
  • Prepare journal entries, account analyses, and supporting schedules for monthly financial reporting.
  • Assist with ownership reporting requirements and special financial projects.
  • Support internal and external audit requests by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with annual financial statement audits and tax-related requests.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, internal controls, and operational efficiencies.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, (or currently taking classes working towards Associate’s degree)
  • Minimum of two (2) years of hotel or resort accounting experience.
  • Marriott accounting and reporting systems experience required.
  • Experience performing bank reconciliations and balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Strong understanding of hospitality revenue accounting, cash management, and month-end close processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Experience in a full-service hotel.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and hospitality performance metrics.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to independently research, analyze, and resolve financial discrepancies.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial and business information.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with management and operational departments.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced hospitality environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry files and office materials up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through electronic communications.
