Lead architecture and development of the payments platform, design scalable distributed systems, mentor engineers, own technical roadmap, collaborate with product and partners, ensure reliability and participate in 24/7 on-call rotation.
About This Role:
As a Staff Engineer on the Consumer Payment Portal team, you are the technical heartbeat of our mission to humanize the debt collection process. You will architect and scale the platform that allows distressed borrowers to regain financial control through flexible, digital-first payment solutions. Your goal is to lead the evolution of a secure, high-concurrency payments infrastructure while mentoring the next generation of TrueML engineers to build with precision and empathy.
What You'll Do:
- Architect Financial Freedom: Lead the design and development of critical payment systems that handle sensitive transactions safely, securely, and at scale.
- Expand the Ecosystem: Partner with global payment gateways and providers to integrate new workflows, alternative payment methods (APMs), and flexible scheduling options that meet consumers where they are.
- Drive Technical Strategy: Define the long-term roadmap for our payment infrastructure, ensuring our systems stay ahead of industry trends and company growth.
- Solve the "Hard" Problems: Dive into complex distributed systems challenges across multiple teams to deliver robust, well-engineered solutions that others might miss.
- Elevate the Team: Act as a force multiplier by mentoring senior and junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous "1% better" improvements.
- Champion Operational Excellence: Own the "Definition of Done" for your team, ensuring high standards for code quality, observability, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Guard System Reliability: Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation as a senior escalation point, ensuring our portal remains a reliable resource for customers whenever they need it.
Who You Are:
- A Seasoned Architect: You bring 8+ years of progressive software engineering experience, with a proven track record of leading large-scale, complex projects from a blank page to production.
- A Backend Expert: You possess expert-level proficiency in at least one major language (we use Go, Python, and Javascript) and have deep experience with microservices and distributed systems.
- Cloud-Native: You are highly proficient in AWS (or GCP/Azure) and have hands-on experience managing containerized environments using Docker and Kubernetes.
- A Systems Thinker: You have an elite grasp of data structures, algorithms, and design patterns, with the ability to articulate "why" a specific architecture is the right choice for the business.
- A High-Impact Communicator: You can translate high-level business goals into technical requirements and explain complex architectural trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
- A Mentor at Heart: You find genuine satisfaction in helping other engineers grow and are committed to fostering a collaborative, high-performing environment.
