About Us
iota Biosciences, a wholly owned subsidiary of Astellas Pharma US, is advancing a new class of bioelectronic medicines through the development of fully implantable Class III medical devices. Our proprietary technologies open therapeutic and diagnostic possibilities not previously accessible to clinicians.
Together with Astellas, we are committed to patient-centric design, scientific and engineering excellence, and cross-functional teamwork. These principles guide us in bringing transformative, first-of-its-kind technologies into the clinic and closer to patients.
What You’ll Do
As our Senior Firmware Engineer, you’ll combine hands-on technical expertise with strategic leadership to guide the development of next-generation Class III active implantable devices:
• Contribute to technical direction – partner with technical leads and management to execute on the firmware roadmap and evolve embedded software architecture within defined system boundaries.
• Deliver high-quality embedded software – design, implement, and verify firmware for embedded subsystems such as power management, ASIC interfaces, and communication systems, with a focus on robustness and maintainability.
• Enable innovation – integrate and debug subsystems, perform benchtop testing, and support reliability, verification, and compliance activities aligned with medical device standards.
• Collaborate cross-functionally – work closely with mechanical, electrical, systems, and quality teams, as well as external partners, to deliver complex features from concept through clinical readiness.
Responsibilities:
• Design, develop, test, and optimize embedded software for iota's devices across the entire product lifecycle.
• Optimize RF/BLE power delivery and control system implemented on an embedded platform. Use modern software techniques to support multiple products while maximizing software reuse.
• Collaborate with software engineers to develop the "big data" infrastructure for efficiently sending all required data from the embedded processor to the application software, cloud backend, as well as retrieving any configuration data and messages from the backend.
• Own the process of verifying embedded software to medical regulatory standards while maintaining an industry-leading development pace.
• Improve team software development processes and infrastructure including DevOps activities.
What you’ll bring:
• B.S. in computer science, electrical engineering, or related technical field, with 6+ years industry work experience programming in C/C++
• OR M.S. in computer science, electrical engineering, or related technical field, with 4+ years industry work experience programming in C/C++
• Experience in Real-time OS (RTOS) for embedded platforms
• Experience in wireless communication protocols like Bluetooth low energy (BLE)
Preferred qualifications:
• Experience with test automation tools (e.g., Jenkins) and modern software test/deployment methodologies.
• Comfortable working in a python environment for tests and prototyping.
• Substantial prior experience with ISO 13485 (QMS), ISO 14971 (risk management) and/or IEC 62304 (medical device software)
Why Join Us
• Mission with impact – see your work directly enable life-changing therapies
